Photos & interviews with Lizzie & Lucy by Paul Burgoine.
Lizzie was part of a three rider breakaway that formed in the middle of the race and it was touch and go as to whether they would hold off a fast closing bunch but hold on they did and Amy proved to have the fastest legs to the line.
It was Amy Pieters second win of the season after her stage victory at the Ladies Tour of Qatar and after the finish, Amy said: “Four of us got away on the Paterberg and then on the Paderstraat it dropped to three. I knew they were good sprinters too but I was confident in myself and knew that if it came back together we had Kirsten behind”.
“I started the sprint from the front and it really was all or nothing”.
Britain’s Lucy Garner (Team Giant Shimano) was understandably pleased with her team mate Amy Pieters taking the win with Lucy saying to Paul Burgoine “I’m glad I finished in a pretty good group and climbed quite well, but unfortunately I didn’t avoid the crash and got a few bumps but all in all I am pleased with today”. And with that Lucy needed to go and warm up on an increasingly bleak day in Gent.
Lizzie Armitstead (Boels Dolmans) said after “I’m a bit disappointed with third place I just didn’t have anything in the sprint. I really enjoyed the race this year pretty happy but I would have liked to have won, but happy to be on the podium.”
“I felt completely in control on the climbs, just nothing left for the sprint. I feel I’m definitely in better shape than last year, a lot healthier after I had a solid winter. The team has grown, we have better equipment and better riders and the feeling in the team is very positive, and I just feel a lot happier.”
