Report & Result – BBM Spring Road Race

A full field of 60 riders took to the start of the BBM Revolution Spring Road Race over nine and a half laps of the 5.8 mile circuit. The weather was kind to the race with blue skies but with a strong westerly winds to make a challenge of the exposed flat circuit.

Within 1km of racing, Squadra RT were on the attacked albeit short lived. The first 10 miles of racing saw a few attacks but nothing stuck until the third lap when the pace lifted and riders begun to get shelled from the back of the race. Half a lap later and 5 riders broke clear building a gap of 15 seconds over the chasing bunch.

The break swelled to 12 riders one lap later, but the gap began to close on the bunch. Sensing being caught, James Sharp (York Cycleworks) Julian Grommet (Squadra RT) and Julian Ramsbottom (Pedalpushers) attacked the break along with Phil West (VC St Raphael)

The quartet worked well together in team time trial style as the lap board ticked down, building a lead of up to 40 seconds with 15 miles to the finish. With two laps to go the gap closed slightly to 26 seconds and at the bell with 5.8 miles of the race remaining, the increased slightly to 36 seconds.

However a game of cat and mouse ensured over the final stages of the race and within a mile of the finish, the break was caught and James Sharpe immediately attacked, holding on for a well deserved solo victory as a bunch sprint fought it out 8 seconds behind.

Fast man Gile Pidcock took the bunch sprint for second place from David Brearley and Alex Orrell Turner.
