York Cycleworks were in charge of the NYRRL no 6 this evening held around the wonderful circuit of Stillington in the Howardian Hills of North Yorkshire. The sun shone, the riders came out in force to tackle the undulating course with a nice climb through Creyke village and to find a sting in the tale with a lap of Brandsby hill to finish.
Forty seven riders took to the course and it soon had its fair share of drama with Matthew Enticknap having the misfortune to puncture after five mins. He did a grand job of marshalling though for the duration of the remaining race!
Everyone stayed together on lap one, then on lap two, we had a couple of escapees off the front led by Neil Harris (PH Mas cycling) and Josh Bennett (Crosstrax) and these two established a lead of 23 seconds only for it to be chased down by the peloton working well together.
A small crash heading into Creyke village split the field a little when a rider swerved and a touch of wheels brought down six riders. All got up but one, who suffered a few cuts and grazes and a swollen ankle. Going into the last two laps, a few tried to break clear to no avail, then a move was made by Albarosa rider Maciej Wontorowski, Ryan Ellis (Nfto cycling) and Max West (Clifton CC). These three worked well together to establish a gap of 25 seconds. The remaining bunch decided to save their energy for the final climb, as the gap then grew to 45 seconds on the final lap.
Shortly after the bridge into Brandsby village, Richard Kelt (Ilkley CC) decided to go clear of the bunch, however he was unfortunately brought back up the climb. The three stayed away to make it easy for the judges to place everyone, with Maciej Wontorowski taking a well deserved win from Ryan Ellis and Max West.
The up and coming rider Archie Cross (PH Mas) rode the climb easily to take fourth spot, ensuring his second cat licence, followed by Tom Ford (private member) and Andrew Myers (Clifton CC) taking the sixth place. It was a fantastic event run by Andrew ‘fraz’ Frazer and Sam Streeton and their band of helper from York Cycleworks. Though I’m not sure the riders appreciated Fraz’s humour with boards out to show 500/400/300/200/100metres to go up a steep climb! However with 29 finishers, they can’t of minded too much.
Excellent weather, excellent finish and great riding, and a coffee whilst watching the sun go down is all positive in my opinion.
Hope to see everyone supporting the events on their next year.
