1st Chard Wheelers’ Annual Spring CircuitsÂ
Nearly 270 riders braved cold and windy conditions as winter made a return at 1st Chard Wheelers’ annual Spring Circuits at Merryfield in Somerset.
The blustery conditions and aggressive racing ensured breaks in most races, with fields split apart by the condtions on the exposed airfield circuit.
Winners in the under eights were Louis Gamsworthy (Taw Velo) and Hollie Morrish (North Devon Whls), while the under 10s were won by Kyle Jones (Maindy Flyers) and Dotty Baldaro (North Devon Whls), whose brother Sid just lost out in a close sprint to Sam Medlyn (One & All) in the under 12s, the winning girl being Laura Curle (VC Walcot).
The combined U14 /16 race saw over 40 riders start, and the race split from the gun. Joe Saunders (Mid Devon CC) winning from James Mitri (Dream Cycling) in a two up sprint after being away all race. Evan Rouse (North Devon Whls ) taking third by winning the sprint from a group of six chasers.
Rowan Ellis (1st Chard Wheelers) won the under 14 race by being the only cat B rider to battle into the chasing group, while team mate Evan Richards won the bunch sprint to make it a one / two for the promoting club; Toby Peters taking third place.
In the girls’ race Alannah Wickett (One & All) finished alone to win from Welsh visitor Georgia Bailey (Newport Olympic). Evie Lane (Certini) sprinting in for third. Jess Morrish (North Devon Whls) was the best under 14.
The category 4 race was the only one to finish in a bunch sprint Ashley Fletcher (North Devon Whls) winning a drawn out sprint from John Mills (RNRMCA) and Frederik Scheske (Uni of Exeter CC).
The cold and windy conditions didn’t deter Jo Tindley (Team WNT) and Laura Clode (VC St.Raphael) from making a race long break to take first and second in the womens’s race. Jessica Hill (VC St.Raphael) winning another two up sprint for third after clipping off the front of the chasing group in the closing stages.
The two up break theme continued in the cat 3 and 4 race with Peter Giddings (VC Walcot) having a comfortable sprint win from race long breakaway companion Ashton St.Hill (Forza Cycles). Steve Birch (Exeter Whls) took third in a blanket bunch finish that saw 4th to 9th places separated by less than a bike length.
In the main race the leading group was again whittled down by the conditions to a two up sprint in an aggressive race that saw the pattern change constantly. Team Tor’s James Porter won from Velosure Starly Primal’s new Spanish rider Adria Moreno. Elliott Davies and James Williams both of Team Tor took third and fourth rounding off a good day for the local club.
