Rider Chat: Jonathan Harris Q & A
1. When will you start your road season and what will be the first race?
Jonathan: Plan is to start racing around mid-March with some National B races or one of the SERRL races.
2. What races will be your targets for 2016 and why?
Jonathan: I’m getting a little long in the tooth these days, so my main job in the team will be to work for the younger guys whilst telling them how good the old days were! My main individual targets will be Masters racing: the National Masters road race and the World Masters Track Championships in October.
3. How will you spend the time on the bike between now and your first race in training?Â
Jonathan: I’ll be doing a mix of everything: longer distance, threshold efforts, high intensity stuff and a bit of racing track league to keep things interesting.
4. What was your favourite Xmas present?
Jonathan: Favourite: Star Wars DVD from my son. Least favourite: virus from my daughter!
5. When it rains, which its doing a lot right now, is it turbo time or wrap up and get wet?
Jonathan: Between work and family commitments, my opportunities to train are really limited, so I just have to get out there if it’s raining. I’ve got a winter bike with proper full length mudguards which, combined with a decent jacket and overshoes, means riding in the rain is not that bad.
6. If you could do any race in the world including the best ones in the world etc, what would it be and why?
Jonathan: It’s only a new race, but I love Strade Bianche. 200km through the rolling hills of Tuscany, gravel roads and a steep final kick in to Siena. What’s not to love?
7. What piece of food can you not do without where ever you are on the road during the season!
Jonathan: Good coffee and a pile of dried dates.
8. What is your favourite music track when warming up for a race or on the turbo?
Jonathan: Bit of old school rock: Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, etc
9. If given the option, would you prefer normal brakes or disc brakes on your road bike?
Jonathan: Love the disc brakes on my mountain bike but not entirely convinced that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks on road.
10. What’s the spec of your race bike for 2016 and your favourite bits on it? (include a pic or two if you have them!)
Jonathan: We’ll be getting our bikes soon, so not sure of the exact spec yet, but I’ll be riding a Specialized Tarmac supplied by Banjo Cycles. It will be topped off by the addition of a custom Raceware Garmin mount and a headset cap supplied by Kapz.
