Feature – Matthew Leary Q & A
1. What was your highlight from 2015 and who are you riding for in 2016?
Matthew: My biggest highlight was doing the nationals in Lincoln. It was quite strange lining up at the start with the pro tour teams who you watch on TV but just treated it like any other race. Another highlight was I was able to race in Belgium for 10 weeks. I’ll be riding for In Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT for 2016.
2. When will you start your road season and what will be the first race?
Matthew: I start my season this weekend at Perf’s Pedal Race to get the ball rolling for the season but start racing most weekends by the end of February.
3. What races will be your targets for 2016 and why?
Matthew: I’m going back to Belgium for a few weeks again this year and aiming for some good results there. Another target of mine is the Tour of Sussex. I did it last year but didn’t rest between coming back from Belgium and was very fatigued and didn’t get the result I was looking for. This year, there are more stages and looks like a tougher route as well. I want to do some of the premier calendars and nationals again. Another target is to join a elite team for 2017, which will be my long term goal for 2016.
4.How will you spend the time on the bike between now and your first race in training?
Matthew: I just got back from a two week training camp in Spain so this week has mainly been easy rides leading up to the Perfs at the weekend.
5. When it rains, which its doing a lot right now, is it turbo time or wrap up and get wet?
Matthew: I don’t mind getting wet for a while but also don’t mind going on the turbo so depends on what session I have to do. I like doing split days so ride in the morning then turbo in the evening. I once sat on the turbo for three and half hours.
6. If you could do any race in the world including the best ones in the world etc, what would it be and why?
Matthew: Tour of Flanders. In Belgium I was staying in Oudenaarde so we were just down the road from the cobbled climbs. The TV doesn’t do them justice about how steep and how bad the cobbles are.
7. What piece of food can you not do without where ever you are on the road during the season!
Matthew: Where do I start, when riding I like banana malt loaf. Off the bike I love my sweets!
8. What is your favourite music track when warming up for a race or on the turbo?
Matthew: Muse- Butterflies and Hurricanes
9. Who is the professional in the peloton on the tele who you enjoy watching race most and why?
Matthew: Vincenzo Nibali. He’s such a class rider. He can climb, descend and everything else. Stage 5 in the 2014 Tour was the best stage in recent years.
10. If given the option, would you prefer normal brakes or disc brakes on your road bike?
Matthew: I haven’t ridden disc brakes so I’ll say normal but I would like to try disc brakes.
11. What’s the spec of your race bike for 2016 and your favourite bits on it?
Matthew: I have a Specialized S-works Allez with Ultegra 11 speed. It’s a amazing bike and really light considering it’s an alloy frame.
