The VeloUK Feature Q & A’s continue, this time with Grant Martin of the Spokes Racing Team

Feature: Grant Martin Q & A
1. When will you start your road season and what will be the first race?
Grant: This season will start really early on this year as our team has been accepted into junior Kuurne Brussel Kuurne at the end of February. To get ourselves into a more racing mood the team will also be racing the week before at the Croft racing circuit.
2. What races will be your targets for 2016 and why?
Grant: This season, I am aiming for the UCI races. We are travelling to Junior Kuurne Brussels Kuurne and the international Tour of Axel which are all stand out events to me.
3. How will you spend the time on the bike between now and your first race in training?
Grant: As my season is starting quite early with a big race, I am currently working on my strength and speed. Gym, interval turbo sessions, track league and some long rides are all present in my training at the moment.
4. What was your favourite Xmas present?
Grant: Well, I was given some nice BOSE head phones to go with my Spotify so it’s really nice to chill and listen to music.
5. When it rains, which its doing a lot right now, is it turbo time or wrap up and get wet?
Grant: Well it depends on what’s on my plan. If it is a road ride, then that’s what I’ll do but maybe not quite as much if it’s particularly bad. Only advice would be to make sure to put on extra kit as I would rather be too warm than wet and freezing.
6. If you could do any race in the world including the best ones in the world etc., what would it be and why?
Grant: Easy! Paris-Roubaix, I love the race as it’s always so exciting and mental. It’s always a race to get you out of your seat. Close second however would be the World Champs as the opportunity to race for the rainbow jersey would be incredible.
7. What piece of food can you not do without where ever you are on the road during the season!
Grant: It would have to be Tom Boonen. I love how he doesn’t wait until the final couple of kilometres to attack but makes the race exciting even from like 60km out. Legend!
8. What is your favourite music track when warming up for a race or on the turbo?
Grant: Generally, I tend to listen to the Arctic Monkeys on the turbo but a good pre-race song is “The Race†by Yello.
9. If given the option, would you prefer normal brakes or disc brakes on your road bike?
Grant: Normal brakes. Disc brakes may be better but I don’t believe we need to bring them into the peloton or at least not for a while.
10. What’s the spec of your race bike for 2016 and your favourite bits on it? (include a pic or two if you have them!)
Grant: This year I will be racing on the Kuota Kyron with Shimano Ultegra which I can’t wait. I’m sure it will do me well. My favourite bit of race kit would be my Vittoria Qurano 60s which I loved last year, however, I can’t wait to test ride my Kuota Kyron in a race.
