Rory Townsend celebrates his victory in the 2016 Perfs

Report

The 2016 Perfs Pedal was won by Pedal Heaven’s Rory Townsend who a year previously was the first rider in the race behind the One Pro riders. This year it was Rory’s team who everyone looked to as the only UCI squad and it was their job to make the race.

AN ambulance on the course on lap 1 and a race stoppage for a word from the chief comm delayed their plans but on lap two Joe Fry got on the front on the climb and put the hammer down and split the race wide open to such an extend that after the first two groups, the race was in pieces.

Attacks started quickly on lap 1

The race then settled down into a chase between the leaders and those chasing them and whilst it came down, it was the last lap when the fireworks set the race alight. Grant Ferguson (Pedal Heaven) put the hammer down whilst at the back, Rory Townsend punctured.

He got back on and then joined Ferguson and from then it was attacks left right and centre with the end result that Townsend got clear with around 8k to go and his teammate Mitch Webber won the sprint for second. A Pedal Heaven Academy rider Tom Mazzone was third.

Race is stopped on lap 1 for a little chat from the Chief Comm …

The next lone attacker Mikey Mottram who had a very strong race had plenty of time on his own before a selection came up fast near the Nelson Monument overlooking Portsmouth

Despite not being 100 per cent (bit of a cough), bronze medalist at the Under 23 MTB Worlds in 2015 Grant Ferguson (Pedal Heaven) was giving it big licks at the front over the top of the climb.

Chasers were holding the leaders for a long time …

But Pedal Heaven had strength in numbers in the break

Half a lap to go and Grant Ferguson is clear but when he was caught, with instructions not to take anyone to the line, he had plenty of Pedal Heaven teammates ready to put in the next dig.

After Rory Townsend had won, his teammate Mitch Webber won the gallop for 2nd
