There was a second world title and world record for the outstanding Megan Giglia as the Great Britain Cycling Team enjoyed another excellent day at the 2016 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Italy.
Giglia added to her world title in the C3 individual pursuit with a stunning display in today’s 500 metre time-trial. The second rider off, she set an unbeatable time of 41.761 which was too much for Denise Schindler who finished in second place with a time of 43.159.
Giglia was delighted to win another world title and pleased with a second world record at this week’s championships. “The first one was great and a surprise to a degree; the second one was just an added bonus to be fair. I won’t lie, I try and put those kinds of pressures on myself anyway but I wasn’t really expecting it so yeah I’m pretty chuffed. There is no way I could have done it without the whole team behind me.†Giglia later finished sixth in her final event, the Scratch race.
In the day’s other racing there was a first medal at world championship level for 18-year-old Louis Rolfe in the men’s C2 kilo. After Canadian Tristan Chernove set an early time of 1:13.279, Rolfe went second fastest with a personal best of 1:15.925. It looked as though Rolfe was going to claim the silver as rider after rider followed him and couldn’t beat his time. However the final rider, China’s Hao Xie just pipped him to the second step on the podium riding 1:15.311.
The teenager from Cambridge, who was cheered on by his watching family, was happy to take the unexpected medal. “I’m pretty happy, it hasn’t really sunk in yet but I suppose in a few weeks time when I reflect on what I’ve done here it will. I was expecting to get a high positioning but never in a million years did I expect to get a medal so I’m really chuffed. I think I made my mum cry but what can you do!â€
TANDEMS
In the tandem pursuit events, there were excellent performances from both British pairings. Lora Turnham and Corrine Hall, World champions on the road in both 2013 and 2014, qualified third fastest in the morning to set up a ride for bronze against the Irish pair of Katie-George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal. Although there hadn’t been much to separate them in qualifying, Turnham and Hall produced a dominant ride, winning by nearly three seconds and setting a new personal best of 3:32.792 to take the bronze and claim their first medal together at a track world championship.
In the men’s event Steve Bate and Adam Duggleby also qualified third fastest with an outstanding time of 4:16:555 which was not only a personal best for the pairing, but also a new national record and at the time of riding, a sea level world record. This performance set up a medal ride against Canada.
Unfortunately though, they couldn’t quite match their brilliant performance in qualification, riding 4:18.669 and missing out on a medal by just over a second. After two days of racing the team sit at the top of the medal table with four gold medals, two silver and three bronze to their tally.
