News: Win for Jones in Taiwan
JLT Condor’s Brenton Jones sprints to victory on stage five of the Tour de Taiwan
The win is the Australian’ first UCI victory for his new team, British based JLT Condor. Brenton was involved in a crash on the final corner of day 1 and showed good form to finish 3rd on the hilly third stage. He was delighted he was finally able to get his hands in the air:
“It feels nice to cap off the week we’ve had, to finish off with another win in this tour and in my first Tour of Taiwan, I’m very very happy.”
“We wanted to win the stage, the last 500m I had incredible lead out from my team mate Russ Downing. He could have easily won the stage but he sacrificed himself to give me the perfect lead out. I’m glad I can get my first UCI win for JLT Condor.”
The 198km stage in Pintung County on the southern tip of Taiwan had all the makings of an explosive sprint finale, which JLT Condor duly capitalised on.
Early in the race a breakaway group escaped and held a three minute advantage over the watchful peloton. In the final 20km of the race cracks began to show in the group and only Patrick Lane of Australian team, IsoWhey SwissWellness was left out front. His lead soon came tumbling down as JLT Condor’s Ian Bibby and James Gullen applied the pressure at the front of the bunch to reel him in.
Into the final 2km JLT Condor set up the perfect lead out for Jones, who launched his untouchable sprint from the wheel of Russell Downing to claim victory in convincing style.
Edmund Bradbury was unable to start the final day following a serious crash caused by another rider on yesterday’s mountain stage. The five man squad now return to Europe to focus on the Tour de Yorkshire and British Cycling’s Spring Series which forms part of the qualification process for the Tour of Britain.
