Chat with Matt Holmes of Madison Genesis who was in the break again today – we spoke to his stage 2 effort

Tour of Britain Chat: Matt Holmes (Madison Genesis)
On stage 3, Matt Holmes (Madison Genesis) was one of the riders to make the all British breakaway, a repeat of what he did on stage 2. On that stage, he was the first to line up on the start line and then created the move by attacking and never looking back.
Asked was it easy to get away, Matt replied “It wasn’t easy to get in the break but it was straight forward. I attacked first and didn’t look back. I was wanting to go for the KoM’s but they weren’t mountainous for me to go for; more sprints than KoMs.”
“Madison are happy that we are getting ourselves on TV so that is all we are going to try to do, get five hours of us on the tele!”
I put it to Matt that he looked comfy in the break and perhaps he was saving something for that final dig at the end? “I wanted to be last caught so I could get on the podium at least. I think we all rode as hard as we could all the way ; it was a headwind so we were going slow but we weren’t holding back”.

“Everyone was working well and another day, that break could have gone to the finish but not with all these sprinters in the race.”
“At the end, I wanted to see how far I could get and perhaps get to the last sprint. I could see the others were tired and when the gap was under a minute, decided to go for a bit of fun”.
A highlight he said was going through the finish area on his own with the crowd cheering for him before adding that his phone was busy afterwards with lots of notifications and that it was good to get complete strangers saying well done.
