As the saying goes, you wait to win a Gold at a World Cup and then two come along at once – that’s the reality for Team KGF

First, Charlie Tanfield went within touching distance of the World Record in winning the Individual Pursuit and then the Team of five got together and won every one of their races to win the Team Pursuit in a ‘56’ which is unheard of for most nations never mind an ‘amateur team which is making big waves in the world of cycling.
The team went to Belarus with many goals and one of them was to get one of the team at least to the Worlds in the individual pursuit. Being only allowed one rider, Charlie Tanfield represented Team KGF on the second day in Minsk.
He qualified fastest laying down the challenge to the better funded nations to come and take the Gold medal off him. They could not. In the final, Tanfield was up against Portuguese rider Ivo Oliveira who had no chance against the young North East rider, one of three cycling brothers (Harry, Toby and Charlie).
Charlie Tanfield won his Gold medal by over five seconds in a staggering time of 4:12.253. Then, a day later, he backed up to win Gold in the Team Pursuit.
Dan Bigham, Charlie, Harry Tanfield and Jonny Wale had already qualified fastest on the Friday and then on Sunday, Charlie was rested and Jacob Tipper brought in for round 1 and the team again were fastest in a ‘57’, a huge result for them as they now had the ride off for the Gold in their sights.
In the final, with Charlie back in the four, it was touch and go for the ride, leading by hundredths and tenths of a second before their rivals took the lead. But Team KGF rode to the schedule and fought back to take the lead and win the Gold medal in 3:56.015.against another trade team, this one from Russia.
They now set their sights on winning the British title again, the very thing that set the team in motion and their assault on beating the world’s nations…
