Liam Manser of Pedal Power Ipswich won the Men’s Elite/1/2 /3/4 race at the Active Fakenham Criteriums in North Norfolk in one of most exciting finishes seen in East Anglia in recent years.

Senior men’s winner Liam Manser (Pedal Power Ipswich) leads Kieran Jarvis (OnForm)

Spectators in Fakenham Market Place had a good view as the top men charged into the final corners and saw Manser’s back wheel go sideways and his bike go over to around 30 degrees from the horizontal, making a crash seem inevitable. But applying skills learnt in mountain biking, he regained control and took the win ahead of Charlie Wright (Strada Sport) and last year’s winner Buauna Ball.

Earlier the field looked to be breaking up under pressure from an attack by Ball and Freddie Checketts (Rapha CC). However Checketts fell on the hairpin and Ball dropped back to the chasers and the field regrouped – to be stretched out on the final climb of Whitehorse Street by former pro Lloyd Chapman who is now coach to several of the leading competitors.

Checketts, not letting his crash entirely spoil his ride, took fourth spot, Kieran Jarvis was fifth, followed by Joshua Wallis and Freddy Pett from the Peterborough-based ActiveEdge team.

Women’s winner Jo Tindley heads the leading group through the Market Place

The Women’s race was dominated by a group originally of nine riders which formed at the head of the race. Helped by tactical blocking by NJC-Biemme teammate Maddie Gammons, Jo Tindley took the win from Lauren Humphreys (Boompods), with Holly Hoy (CT OnForm) third and Georgia Bullard (Jadan Weldtite) fifth.

Gemma Melton (Pedal Power Ipswich, ninth) was top local finisher, with Eastern Cyclo-Cross League winner Lauren Higham 10th.

Youth riders were desperately unlucky that the heavens unexpectedly opened just as their race started. Cambridgeshire rider Harley Pell (LIV AWOL) won the Girls Under 16s from Bethany Barnett (King’s Lynn CC). Eleanor Peel (Bourne Whs) took the U14 Girls’ race. Boys winners were Adam Lightfoot (U16s) and Joseph Smith (Iceni Velo, U14s).

Winner of the Fourth Cat Men’s race, held on very wet roads, was Spalding CC’s Fraser Wallis from Tom Cockerill (Rockingham Forest Whs) and Nigel Dilks (Cycle Derby CC). First lap leader Rob Kitchen brought some cheer to East Coast Riders, the club based in Fakenham, and held on to take fourth place among 29 finishers.
