Spot Interview: Ali Slater wins first UCI Race
A few weeks ago, a rider who is normally helping others in JLT Condor win bike races, took a chance himself and came away with his first UCI race win on the final stage of the Kreiz Breizh Elites (UCI 2.2) in France.
I caught up with Ali as he got ready for the race in Leicester in Sunday and there he said it was great to get his hands in the air. “It was a mega day to finally get a win in a UCI race. It is a good race, I’ve done it before and was consistently there all week and finally got to finish it off.”
Ali explained how there were two of them in the breakaway that he escaped from. “Tom (Moses) was there first and I managed to get across with around 4k to go and I was only really attacking to help Tom out to be honest, give him a free ride and as soon as I got a gap, that was that. I gave it everything up the berg where it finished, and no-one caught me.”
Ali explained his role in the team saying “normally I’m there to help most of the guys out. Try and lead the sprinters out a bit for example and I’m a bit of an all rounder so I am generally there most days and get stuck in”.
“The racing in France was a little bit different to the British racing, more aggressive with lots of guys looking to get involved and fast racing, loads of moves going and the nature of the circuits – shorter and hilly – makes for that fast aggressive racing”.
“It is nice to have that confirmation that I am there or thereabouts and know how to win a bike race.”
His win for sure shows that Mr Dependable” (nickname) is another rider in the team who can be counted upon as a possible winner despite all the work he does for others. “I am always there generally and it was nice to do it and show everyone I can do it. It was worth it just to see John (Herety) smile!; perfect.”
Good luck to Ali in his forthcoming races and thanks for the chat … another of the nice guys in the sport…
