News: Tom Pidcock talks to Sporza
British sensation Tom Pidcock is based in Belgium, a long way from family in Yorkshire. He spoke to Belgium media agency Sporza. Due to the covid crisis, some foreign based riders have to spend the end-of-year period all alone in Belgium. For example, British cyclo-cross rider Tom Pidcock (21) could only give his family a virtual hug. “I haven’t seen my girlfriend since the beginning of December. I don’t know when I will see my family again”
Although Tom Pidcock traditionally sees his family at the end of the year, a reunion was not possible this year. “At Christmas, my parents normally come to Belgium for a week, but because of corona that was impossible. I had to open my Christmas presents via FaceTime. Still, I made the best of it, because the situation is just what it is. We don’t know how long this will take.”
“I don’t find it difficult to be alone for a long time, but without realizing it, it gets under my skin. I hope I can see my family in February, although with the current situation in the UK, it could take longer. Nevertheless, I’ve gotten used to it now. I’ve been away from home a lot since I was 16 years old.”
From March 1, 2021, Pidcock will race in the colors of Ineos. A big step, but the young Briton is certainly not lacking in ambition. “I’m really looking forward to the training camp with the team. The Ardennes classics should suit me on the road and I will probably try to ride the Vuelta.”
Despite the high ambitions, Pidcock is not entirely sure about the Olympic Games. Great Britain has not yet qualified (MTB XC I think – Ed). “I think I’ll be there in Tokyo, maybe with a wildcard. What do I wish for in 2021? A medal at the Games and a win in a WorldTour race. That would be great.”
