The British ‘Z Junior Team’ started their delayed European season on 1 July participating in the Junior Tour of the Basque Country, a five-stage race in the Bilbao region with four climbing road stages and a challenging TT. The team included: Owen Lightfoot, Quentin Cowan, Will Smith, Rory Knowles, George Gray.

The race attracted a high quality field of 198 riders from several top European junior teams, including AG2R, EOLO, MMR Academy, Bathco and Bairaida, as well as the best teams from across Spain. The riders embraced the freedom to race in Europe again and to step onto the steep learning curve of international racing.

The entire team showed its potential with Owen Lightfoot consistently finishing in the front groups to take 9th on GC, Quentin Cowan missed the break on the first day but recovered well with a 3rd on the final stage and 10th on GC.

Will Smith was always at the front of the race but after a mechanical finished in the middle of the field on GC. George Gray was always in touch with the front of the race and took 8th on the Queen stage. The team finished in 4th position on GC.

The team has more racing planned for August and September in UK, Belgium and Italy. Everything in life is of course dependent on public health and Covid regulations in multiple countries.
