News: Fensham Howes-Mas Design Junior Team
As we are seeing abroad right now in the pro races, there is many a young British rider living out their dream of competing with the worlds best. Helping young riders to do that is the Fensham Howes-Mas Design Junior Team who has helped many a young rider step up.
The 2022 team is Alex Beldon, Jacob Bush, Jed Smithson, Ben Wiggins and Mattie Brennan. Young riders who punch above their weight in senior races and were doing the same last year as Youth riders. IE, special talent! The aim of the team, says Giles Pidcock, is to create opportunities abroad for young riders where they can showcase their talent and hopefully secure a place on a development team as Under 23s.
Junior events here in Britain are important to the team, so much so Giles put on a stage race last year when racing was limited and this year is involved in the Junior road championships being in Yorkshire. But racing abroad is also the key to helping his young riders get noticed. Events like UCI Junior events such as Kuurne – Kuurne (their first race); Guido Reybrouck, Nokere Koerse, Tour of Flanders, Philippe Gilbert RR, Aubel-Thimister and Grand Prix Rüebliland.
It is going to be a busy year says Giles with the team doing all British National Junior RR series, Elite Crit Series and hopefully also get an invite to the Tour Series. The team is organising the British National Junior Time Trial and Road Race championships at Bulmer Bank in May (27/28).
Whilst the media spotlight on junior teams can be a worry for teams trying to protect their riders from the pressure of the public, when a team like Fensham Howes-Mas Design Junior Team has ‘names’ like it does, the cycling mad Belgiums are quick to pick up on the names in the team. A Belgian media website, Wielerflits, picked up on this, saying “while Tom Pidcock rides the elite Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne race on Sunday 27 February, his father Giles will be busy with his own junior team, the first time that the team will go to Kuurne”. One of the many talented riders in the team Ben Wiggins was also mentioned, saying “while father Bradley said goodbye to the peloton in 2016, his 16-year-old son is at the beginning of his sporting career”.
He is indeed as are the other talented riders in the team who’s names I see a lot when compiling results and who will be looking for that special help that the likes of Max Poole and Sam Watson to name but two have had from the team in recent years. The team’s special day, the team launch, is Monday 28th February at Silverstone and the team’s key sponsors are Fensham howes, MAS design, Silverstone, Bio Racer and Trinity Sports Management. There is also additional help from the Rayner Foundation, shoes and helmets by Giro, Spatzwear overshoes, wheels WX-R, Ridley bikes and Paul Milnes Cycles.
