Toks writes, “so what do you want from a National Championship Road Race? A relatively tough course ✅ a good bunch of competitive riders ✅ and most importantly, top notch organisation ✅
Well all those boxes were definitely ticked and stamped.

BMCR has some great Road Race circuits and Swynnerton certainly didn’t disappoint – mostly fast flowing with three elevated bits – which naturally became increasingly more selective as the laps started to count down. We rode 5½ laps of which was roughly 49 miles in total.

Within a few K’s of the 1st lap, Mark Fenton; Paul Hone and Andrew Hicklin had forged ahead of the bunch. Before most of us had time to calculate whether or not this was a dangerous move they were well clear and out of sight. In fact, this was the race winning move and the next time we saw them they were chomping cake and sipping tea at the HQ 😀

So what was going on in the bunch then? Well… minutes at a steadyish pace punctuated with intermittent 30 second surges. This tactic wasn’t working as a way to bring back a break or for the most part to get up the road and stay up the road. Although a couple of guys did briefly form a second break which was ultimately brought back.

Everyone remained on high alert jumping on every move especially those from Roy Chamberlain. So despite lots of attempts to get away, we remained intact until things finally broke up a bit in the last 2-3 kilometres. It was a really tough but perversely quite enjoyable race. Well done to everyone who made it around to finish the race 🤪

Great work by the breakaway guys 🥉🥈🥇. Big congrats and thanks to Geoff Saxon and his team, the Motor Bike support guys, the marshals and tea ladies 👏👏
