Sophia has been racing her bike from the age of seven and is now going into her first year as an Under 16. Sophia’s favourite disciplines in cycling are road and track as she loves riding in a bunch.
Sophia’s 2025 season will be starting with the third round of the Monsters of Track in Glasgow which takes place later on this month. In 2025, Sophia will be continuing to race for her home club, Manilla cycling.
Sophia says “I am looking forward to all the events in the upcoming year especially the track racing as I will be doing more of that this year. I have not yet raced abroad but it is something I would be looking to do in the future. My favourite race in 2024 was the road race on day three of the School games at Loughborough University. My racing highlights were the School games and Monsters of track but my other highlights outside of racing was going to a training camp in Greece with my team and also improving my social media and beginning my own cycling YouTube channel — https://www.youtube.com/@sophridesbikes
Sophia’s toughest race in 2024 was day 2 of the North West racing in Morecambe. “It was the hilly stage and the weather was awful with lots of heavy rain which made it both physically and mentally hard” Sophia explains. “And, I got a mechanical at the top of the hill which added to everything that was already going wrong.”
“The main thing I learnt from 2024 is just to never give up. You always have more left in the tank than you think and you just need to keep on pushing even when it’s hard. The key people who are helping me progress in cycling are my coach and dad Adam Brooks and also my other coaches such as Paul daily and also most importantly, my teammates, as we all learn and improve together pushing each other to strive to be the best we can be.”
Winter training for Sophia is where all the differences are made so, no, it is not just about riding. “I can’t give an exact number of hours I spend on the bike per week as it varies from week to week but I can say it is a lot as I want to get the most out of my training. Yes, I supplement my riding with other training as I have gym sessions at least twice a week and I’m trying to run at least once a week also.”
