BikeP0RN: Cero AR22 Alloy Wheel
New for 2016 from Cero is the AR22 Tubeless alloy wheel for rim brake bikes weighing just 1420 gms.
This wheelset has the new wider rim, 24mm, which is becoming the defacto choice and allowing the use of 25mm and 28mm tyres, both tubeless and non-tubeless clinchers. The wider rim increases the internal air volume of a standard road tyre, while also allowing the use of wider tyres the main benefit is an increased tyre air volume which provides the ability to run lower pressures, which reduces road chatter, increase rider comfort, and decrease rolling resistance.
As the Cero AR22 rim is road tubeless compatible too, the bead lock system helps insure the tyre will not unseat under low pressure. The application of tubeless compatibility further compliments this design, allowing for even lower tyre pressures without the risk of pinch flats. Sealant used with a tubeless tire will also reduce the likelihood of flats from minor punctures.
As someone who has had the misfortune to puncture not once but three times on a thorn strewn lane on a single ride, tubeless wheels with a sealant in them do sound very enticing. They may also be very useful in races where the sealant may well reduce those minor annoying punctures that ruin many a rider’s race especially a crit where there are no laps out!
The rims with the tubeless tape are 22mm deep and come in two configurations:
20/24 hole rims for lighter rider
or
24/28 for the heavier rider
The front are radial spoked whilst the rear wheel is two cross. The rear wheel will take Shimano, SRAM or Campagnolo cassettes; 10 or 11 speed. The Cero AR22 rims are manufactured from the same “super alloy” as the AR30 and utilize the same T10 cold working process which means the rim is both lightweight and strong.
The wheels share the same superb Cero hub as the AR30 and RC45 wheel which is designed to offer a superb balance of weight and performance. The 280g set are manufactured from 7075 aluminium and feature high quality sealed bearings throughout with a 24 ratchet engagement on the Aluminium hub body combined with a 3 pawl and spring engagement.
The Cero AR22 wheels use the Sapim CX-Ray spoke that still receives the best results in fatigue testing of any spoke. Its unique strength and flexibility make the CX-Ray the perfect choice a wheel. The middle section of the spoke is drawn then pressed in a special mold to form its specific profile.
For those who’d prefer tubeless tyre to be fitted for them, Cycle Division can do this as well.
