1. How did you get into cycle racing …
Adam: I came in to bike racing from Triathlon, so I’ve had to work on my bike handling skills ;)
2. What’s your favourite discipline in cycling?
Adam: I love a good time trial but that’s not ‘proper’ racing. My favourite is a lumpy (not hilly) road race, proper racing when you have to beat the man (or woman) next to you.
3. What is the best thing about bike racing?
Adam: The banter. Spending a few hours with your mates taking the Mick and generally talking about stuff your wife’s not interested in.
4. What was the highlight of 2016 for you and why?
Adam: The Team training camp in Majorca. I’m pretty new to cycling so this was the first time I’d been cycling abroad and the way our team train, it was like a 6 day stage race.
5. What was your favourite/most fun race of 2016
Adam: Lazonby (3/4’s), great circuit that suits me well and we dominated the race as a team
6. What was the toughest race of 2016 for you and why?
Adam: That’s easy, The North Wales Road Race series Round 4 at Llyn Brenig. That is one tough circuit, maybe even tougher than Dolphinholme. It was either up steep climbs or into a 30mph head/crosswind. Hats off to Joe Bowers for taking the win on that one.
7. If there was one thing you learned most in 2016 to help you go faster/better, what was that?
Adam: Patience
8. What is the best piece of equipment (clothing/bike/gadget) to do with racing you are proud of most?
Adam: Our new team bikes, the Specialized S-Works Tarmac eTap. We’re very lucky to get such great support from our sponsors and this beast is going to be a joy to ride.
9. What is your warm up routine for races – rollers or turbo? Music or no music?
Adam: I don’t own rollers, so for a more specific warm up I’d need to use my turbo which can be a pain in the arse, so I usually warm up on the road. Less fuss, less faff, which is important when you’re travelling to and from races on your own. Turbo = music, Road = No music
… continued after advert
10. Will you stay in the UK to prepare for next season during the winter or get in a training camp or two abroad to get in some serious miles?
Adam: I’m going to be sticking it out in the hard Northern winter this year. The team are off to Majorca again early season but unfortunately I can’t afford to go (crowd funding donations gladly accepted! Ha)
11. When will you start training for 2017 and what comes first – long steady miles or a mix of miles and efforts?
Adam: I’ve already started and it’s been pretty mixed between gym, miles and efforts.
12. What are the goals for 2017?
Adam: I fancy a crack at the National Masters and I’d like another go at the Emergency Services National Champs again. Steven Roach (Raleigh GAC) taught us all a lesson this year so hopefully I can learn from it.
13. Finally, what have you learnt over the years to best deal with the winter months on a bike!
Adam: Invest in a decent set of winter shoes and gloves. Nothing worse than a frosty nip ;)
