We’ve another Q & A from Scottish team Spokes Racing and their young rider Finn Crockett
![]() |
Q&A: Finn Crockett (Spokes Racing Team)
Finn says the best thing about being in his team is “meeting new teammates that I’ll be able to strategize and race with. Also, the race calendar that Spokes provides which includes several races abroad looks amazing”.
1. How did you get into cycle racing …
Finn: I started to race mountain bikes because of the local cycling club. They taught me the basic skills and gave me the opportunity to race.
2. What’s your favourite discipline in cycling?
Finn: Road cycling for sure. I have also started Time Trialling which I enjoy!
3. What is the best thing about bike racing?
Finn: For road racing, I love the aspects of a big peloton and racing within a team.
4. What was the highlight of 2016 for you and why?
Finn: Winning the Scottish National Junior 10TT. It was a huge shock and I really didn’t expect to win so was a nice surprise.
5. What was your favourite/most fun race of 2016
Finn: The Scottish Junior Crit champs, just because of how fast and sketchy it was.
6. What was the toughest race of 2016 for you and why?
Finn: In the 2016 season, I tried my first National Race. This was a huge shock to the system with the speed and chaos within the peloton. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it.
7. If there was one thing you learned most in 2016 to help you go faster/better, what was that?
Finn: To try conserve as much energy as possible throughout the race and to constantly make sure I am hydrated and fuelled.
8. What is the best piece of equipment (clothing/bike/gadget) to do with racing you are proud of most?
Finn: Whenever it is a cold, miserable wet race my Catelli Gabba does the job of keeping me warm and dry so it’s a winner.
9. What is your warm up routine for races – rollers or turbo? Music or no music?
Finn: I normally warm up for around 20 minutes on a turbo, with a few tunes in the background to help get in the zone.

10. Will you stay in the UK to prepare for next season during the winter or get in a training camp or two abroad to get in some serious miles
Finn: I’ll be staying in sunny Scotland during the winter for training. Toughens me up for any race that comes my way.
11. When will you start training for 2017 and what comes first – long steady miles or a mix of miles and efforts?
Finn: Training for 2017 normally starts in December which includes long steady rides and then my training will ramp up early January with some hard efforts.
12. What are the goals for 2017?
Finn: To win a National race and to set a new Scottish Junior 10 mile time.
13. Does winter training consist only of riding the bike or running/swimming/gym work (cross training)
Finn: My winter consists of a lot of cross training, I do weight sessions most weeks and also go to a gym class. I’ve also got into swimming which I enjoy a lot.
14. Finally, what have you learnt over the years to best deal with the winter months on a bike!
Finn: To definitely mix up your training such as doing cross training. Winter can be long, so you don’t want to get bored!
