Time trialist Daniel Wolman (London Phoenix) takes the VeloUK question and answer quiz
![]() |
Q & A: Daniel Wolman (London Phoenix)
Daniel Wolman, London Phoenix says the best about his long established club is the knowing there are always people who want to ride their bike and you can join them.
1. How did you get into cycle racing …
Daniel: I stopped playing football due to injury and started riding. I didn’t want to ride crits but wanted to push myself so time trialling seemed like a logical step. I’m never going to be able to compete with the top dogs in a crit race so time trialling, which is essentially only racing against yourself, is the best way to push yourself.
2. What is the best thing about bike racing?
Daniel: Absolutely turning yourself inside out just to achieve a PB
3. What was the highlight of 2016 for you and why?
Daniel: Hitting my target. After a long two years with a major injury and coming back from it last year was the first proper season with a target and I achieved it with two races to go.
4. What was your favourite/most fun race of 2016
Daniel: Favourite race of the season was when I went under my target time. It was CC London’s promotion on the F20/10 which is a dual carriage way course in Hertfordshire.
5. What was the toughest race of 2016 for you and why?
Daniel: My first race of the season as I had a phone call during the night to tell me my grandma had passed away. My parents insisted I should still race as it was an 8am race. I PB’d and all I could think about was my grandma, she definitely inspired me that day.

6. If there was one thing you learned most in 2016 to help you go faster/better, what was that?
Daniel: Do intervals, lots and lots of intervals. For time trialling, theres very little point in doing intervals less than 5 mins for me as they don’t suit the way I ride. Unless there’s a really technical course then you’re sitting on the ski’s trying to push and push until you have nothing left to give. My favourite session from 2016 was 10 min intervals, with a 2.30 recovery 4 times…
7. What is the best piece of equipment (clothing/bike/gadget) to do with racing you are proud of most?
Daniel: I love my bike, it’s a stunning piece of kit and has only just been replaced by the manufacturer in their line up. It’s a BMC TM01, definitely more bike than I deserve!
8. What is your warm up routine for races – rollers or turbo? Music or no music?
Daniel: I take public transport to races so I warm up on the roads, building up intensity. Thankfully, most of the races I do I have ridden a few times now so I know where I can warm up safely. No music in my warm up as I ride straight from my warm up to the start line.
9. Will you stay in the UK to prepare for next season during the winter or get in a training camp or two abroad to get in some serious miles?
Daniel: I will probably head to southern Spain for a week, getting in a week of longer miles.
10. When will you start training for 2017 and what comes first – long steady miles or a mix of miles and efforts?
Daniel: I started on Christmas eve with the Rapha 500 as it inevitably means I enter January when the hard work starts with a semblance of fitness. The first month or two will mean steady miles at the weekend with hopefully an interval session midweek on the commute
11. What are the goals for 2017?
Daniel: To go even faster than 2016!
12. Does winter training consist only of riding the bike or running/swimming/gym work (cross training)
Daniel: I lift weights three times a week on top of bike work. I will also run occasionally as it’s a great way to get a quick bit of fitness work in.
13. Finally, what have you learnt over the years to best deal with the winter months on a bike!
Daniel: Buy good quality clothes, and have a decent length of cycle commute that you are committed to which can be extended if you have a session you need to do.
