Tour de France: Stage 1

Geraint Thomas powered to victory in the second half of the inaugural time trial to claim his first yellow jersey at the Tour de France at the age of 32, ten years after his debut in London. Four Team Sky riders made the top 8 including Chris Froome who was the fastest of the GC favourite on the 14-km long course in Düsseldorf. Alejandro Valverde abandoned after crashing on the wet road.

The Welshman Thomas set a winning time of 16 minutes and four seconds on soaking wet roads in Dusseldorf, not only claiming his first ever Grand Tour stage victory, but the maillot jaune to boot.

After enduring a nervous wait on the hot seat Thomas took the win by five seconds, leading home a superb showing from Team Sky – who placed four riders in the top eight positions. Chris Froome made a statement of his own with sixth place in Germany, the best of the GC contenders out on course.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” admitted a shell-shocked Thomas after the stage. “I hadn’t even thought about it to be honest I was super relaxed coming in. I felt like somebody was going to beat me. I’ve had my fair share of bad luck this year and back home the last month hasn’t been great – my wife and mum have both had a bit of a rough time.

“It’s amazing to get this win and thanks to everyone who has supported me. It’s a great day.”

Chris Froome was a happy man after a rousing opening to the Tour de France which saw him take time out of his rivals. Froome admitted he took few risks on wet roads around the 14-kilometre course in Germany, but his time, just 12 seconds back on Thomas, stacked up very favourably against his GC rivals.

The three-time Tour winner was able to take 35 and 36 seconds respectively out of Richie Porte (BMC Racing) and Nairo Quintana (Movistar), and 39 from Romain Bardet (Ag2r-La Mondiale).

“I think if you’d told me at the beginning of today that this is what the GC would look like after the stage I’d have definitely taken that,” he told TeamSky.com back at the team hotel. “I went really cautiously around a lot of those corners. I went in with the mentality not to take any kind of risks. A lot of guys hit the deck today and it just wasn’t worth it.

But on the straight bits I felt I was able to push quite hard. It was great to have that feeling, especially given that my time trialling this year hasn’t been up to my normal standards.

“I think we can take a lot away from that as a team. To have four guys in the top 10 just shows the strength of the team we have here.” Froome also expressed his delight to see Thomas pull on the maillot jaune. Paying tribute to the rider who has helped him to his three victories, he added: “I’m just so happy for G. To have won his first stage of the Tour de France and to be in the yellow jersey as well – it’s just incredible. I can remember my first time and it’s such a special moment. I think it’s something that G will remember for the rest of his life.”

Stefan Küng (2nd) BMC: “I would have loved to be in yellow but congratulations to Geraint Thomas. It was a really amazing time. I was down one second on Tony Martin at the intermediate check point and I really tried to pull off a good finish. I put into some time on Tony but Geraint Thomas must have been flying at the end.

I did everything I could and second place it is. In a time trial you always have to take risks but there is always a line and you don’t want to cross it and lie on the floor. It happened to me already so I really tried to stay upright but also go as fast as possible. I think I managed it ok, maybe not the best, but in the end I tried to make a difference on the long straight.”

Richie Porte: “Keep it rubber side down was probably more the goal. I followed Nicolas Roche in the car just before my start and he binned it, so I was petrified to be honest. It was such a slippery course. I would have liked to have done a quicker time but the main thing is to have kept all of my skin”.

“I was a little bit nervous, especially after watching your teammate crash. At the end of the day, I took no risks out there and I think that was the way to ride it out there today. Back at the hotel it looked like it might dry up a bit but it wasn’t to be. I think it was the same conditions for everybody so it all works out fair in the end.”

Alberto Contador: “It’s hard to say if Froome took risks because he has not fallen, but it is clear that he has gone very, very fast,” said Contador about the significant deficit he had on Froome.

“Evidently, the most important thing is to save these first days. It is true that for this TT to lose 42 seconds is a lot of time, but on the other hand, with everything that is ahead, there is a chance that this will change.

“I heard that Alejandro had fallen and we decided to go very carefully in the corners,” explained Contador. “My priority was to go in the corners with great care, and in the straight lines I think went quite fast.

“In the parts where I had to pedal I felt good, although 42 seconds is a lot for 14 kilometers, but this has just begun. Obviously, Froome has made some great differences, he is ahead, so there’s no other way but to go on the offensive. But until we get to the first mountain stage and see how the legs are, you cannot say what tactic to adopt.”

“It’s a huge pity for Alejandro (Valverde). It costs a lot to prepare the Tour de France, it is almost half a year preparing for it, and in the first corner, you go home. I want to offer him my encouragement and now, obviously not, but surely in two days he will start thinking about the Tour of Spain.”

Tony Martin (World TT Champion racing in his home country): “The crowd was amazing. I’m sorry about the rain but it’s what everybody’s saying after this race. I lost eight seconds to Geraint [Thomas], I have to analyse what went wrong. The support was amazing.”

“It was such a big motivation for me. I could not hear my radio, it was so loud with everybody shouting for me. It’s the big thing I will take in from this stage. There are still two weeks to go and still a few goals to reach. In the last 2 km I missed a bit of power but that’s normal in such a short TT. You give it everything from the start and see how far you can go.”

Matteo Trentin: “I’m surprised of today’s performance (45h). My goal was just to go full gas and make sure I don’t blow up, because there’s still three weeks ahead. I felt good, but I definitely wasn’t expecting such a result. It’s my maiden top 10 in a time trial in the pro ranks, and what better place to get it than the biggest scene in cycling? It’s really nice and it gives me more confidence for the next days”, said Matteo, who is riding his fourth Tour de France.

Marcel Kittel: “I can’t tell you how happy I am to start the Tour de France in front of my countrymen. It’s incredible how many people came here today and it makes me proud that my country is celebrating the sport again”, a smiling Marcel said at the finish, before describing his experience during the 14km ITT.

“The time trial is a painful discipline, but I enjoyed it. With all these fantastic fans cheering for me from the start, I was riding in a tunnel of noise and it was really cool. That motivated me even more do get a good result today”, concluded the German, who will now move his sights to stage 2, which will take place between Düsseldorf and Liège.

Peter Sagan (Bora hansgrohe) “I pushed it to the maximum and the sensations were good. It was difficult because of the rain, but I didn’t crash, which was the most important thing today. Now we’ll see where we end up with today’s result, but I’m feeling confident for the coming three weeks.”

Jos van Emden (Lotto Jumbo): “The last days, I noticed that my legs were good,” van Emden said. “Normally I can ride in a really high performance peak, get back a bit and continue riding at that level. Today, I was never able to get in that peak. That was the few percentage points I missed today. I hoped for more, but gave it my all and then you have to live with it.”

Primoz Roglic (Lotto Jumbo) crashed: “I took risks and that did not work out, it is as simple as that,” Roglic explained. “I did not mind that it rained today, normally it does not affect me. I did not suffer any injuries from my crash, just a few abrasions. It was the first chance, there are still 20 chances to come.”

Dylan Groenewegen (Lotto Jumbo), the team’s sprinter also , suffered a few scratches on his backside. “I will get over that,” Groenewegen said. “It was very slippery. I took the bend gingerly, but my front wheel just slipped away. I feel fresh again. It was good the time trial was today, so I could blow the slime from my lungs. I feel well, and that’s a good thing for tomorrow.”

Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data – 10th): “It was really nice to finally get the race started. Personally, I’m happy about my performance. I was feeling all-right but I didn’t risk anything through the slippery corners. Still, I managed to finish in an okay time and I’m quite happy about that. Of course, you always want to go faster but I still think I should be satisfied with today’s result”.

Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb): “I pushed a lot of power and had some good speed on the straight parts of the course. When I passed Valverde after his crash it scared me a bit so I took the corners more carefully after that. Generally I’m quite satisfied with today and looking forward to the coming days.”

Nikias Ardnt (Team Sunweb): “For me it was really special to ride a Tour de France stage in my own country, directly in front of my front door. I prepared well and tried to get the best possible result. I’m very confident with the stage and I’m looking forward to the next few weeks. I feel good and I think the small gap to the front today shows that.”
