News: Simon Yates “I am excited for a fresh challenge”
After riding two Grand Tours in one season for the first time this year, Yates is happy about doubling-up once again in 2018 and is looking forward to making his debut in the 101st edition of the Giro d’Italia.
“I am excited for a fresh challenge,” Yates explained. “After originally targeting the Giro last season and then my plans changed last minute to race the Tour, so I am happy to finally get to race the Giro.”
“The Giro always has a hard parcours and 2018 will be no different. It will be an extremely difficult race and I look forward to the new challenge.”
Despite recognising some will be surprised from his absence at the Tour de France, after finishing in seventh place overall and winning the white jersey this season, the 25-year-old is looking at the overall picture for the year and his and the team’s long-term goals.
“To keep progressing as a rider I think you need to challenge yourself in different ways, and riding the Giro instead of the Tour de France is one of these ways,” Yates continued. “I hope to have many more opportunities to challenge for the Tour de France in the future.”
“With the worlds being an extremely hard circuit, I think also riding the Vuelta next year will be great preparation for the world championships and after having success in the Vuelta in the past, I always look fondly upon this race and next season will be no different.”

With the young trio of climbing talent, in the Yates brother and Esteban Chaves, ORICA-SCOTT, to be known as Michelton-SCOTT 2018, have selected a programme which see’s Chaves and Yates racing together once again, which the Vuelta Espana stage winner is looking forward to.
“Riding both Grand Tours with Esteban is always a nice experience,” Yates continued. “He’s an easy going guy who takes the stress away from the racing, which is exactly what you need when the racing is so hard and stressful.”
“As always I think we will make a great partnership.”
