The 23 year-old Slovenian arrived alone at the finish line and said afterwards “I have to thank all my teammates” – says Matej – “for the great work they have done throughout the day. I knew that the climb was long and that I could get back on the first group without spending too much energy. I wanted to help Giovanni Visconti in the final and when Majka left, I went after him. I found myself in front and so I decided to insist“.
“I had been studying the climb on the first three laps and I knew that if I had taken the last descent first, I could play my chances. Before the end of the descent, I turned around and saw that nobody was there, then I did not turn around until the finish line!“.
“It’s a very important success because it’s my first victory with the Team Bahrain Merida’s jersey. After Abu Dhabi Tour, I trained well and I had good feelings. Yesterday I did a good Strade Bianche (11th) and today it went even better! Now I will start to concentrate on the Giro d’Italia“.

Giovanni Visconti (6th): “I was fine even if the effort of the Strade Bianche made itself felt in the final. I tried to surprise the favorites but the group of the best took me back. I’m happy for Matej who also made a great race yesterday. “
The Race
Once the early breakaway had formed, it was Michleton Scott who took up control at the head of the peloton for Adam Yates, and they kept the eight leaders within four minutes for the first 70 kilometres.
The breakaway’s advantage started to fall dramatically on the final four circuits that included the San Baronto climb before they were finally swept up with 40kilometres and two laps to go before a trio of riders tried to steal a march on the peloton going into the final 27 kilometre circuit.
Mitchelton-SCOTT continued to lead the peloton and set a high tempo in pursuit of the trio as the main field started to reduce dramatically and an elite group formed at the front. Adam Yates suffered an unfortunate mechanical at the foot of the climb and burned vital energy in the chase back on.

The stray leaders were caught on the last climb with Yates and Impey both present in what was now the front group. Yates started to mix it up with the attacks of other riders and the group whittled down further, but the chase had taken its toll and the Briton was tiring.
Repeated attacks unfurled all the way up the climb, but it was Mohoric who powered away on the descent to create a slight advantage that he held all the way to the line. Impey held on at the front of the chasing bunch to take eighth place.
Daryl Impey – 8th: “It has been my first weekend back racing in Europe with Strade Bianche yesterday and the climate is very different, that’s for sure! I felt ok today, a little pinned toward the end, but ok. We were trying up until the top of the final climb to get Adam away in a small group, but the pace was high and we were tightly marked. When the groups split further down the slopes I was one of the last guys to chase back on to Adam’s group and as we crested the climb the group had swelled again.”
“I struggled a little in the sprint at the end, we hadn’t caught the two leaders and the bunch kicked quite early, but I am pleased with how it went today. We rode really well as a team and I feel pretty good ahead of Tirreno-Adriatico which starts on Wednesday.”
