The Wales Open Criterium on a sunny Friday night in Abergavenny saw British Road Race Champion Connor Swift (Madison Genesis) sprint to victory before crashing, thankfully without injury other lost skin.
The race started quick and the pressure never let up causing splits before two riders escaped, Connor Swift and Jon Mould. They opened up a good sized gap and chases came and went from the teams that missed the move but the two leaders were never threatened by the chasers.
Behind, a much slimmed down peloton with many a lapped rider taken out of the race, saw JLT Condor and Madison Genesis controlling thing and whilst a four man group slipped away in the closing laps (Graham Briggs, Andrew Tennant (Canyon Eisberg), Matthew Bostock and Tobyn Horton (Madison Genesis), that move was soon closed down.
The two leaders however continued to put pressure on the pedals until the final two laps when Swift tried to gap Mould who then decided the best place was to watch swift from the back. It didn’t work though as Connor Swift, who won the British Road Race championship with a long solo effort, sprinted to the line, celebrating all the way to the line and then crashing on the bend following the finish.
The Madison Genesis rider got up thankfully and after giving an interview, went to be cleaned up where we spoke to him about the race.
