Result: Finsbury Park Road Race

Cambridge University CC rider Jack Brown stormed to a dominant victory in the wind and rain in this year’s Finsbury Park Road Race.

Brown won each of the five hill primes and the overall in a powerful display on the rolling Rickling Green circuit in Essex on Sunday (October 14). He broke clear in the first lap with another rider, who soon dropped back, and carried on alone despite endless rain and increasingly strong wind.

His gap reached a maximum of 1min 25 seconds on the 3rd lap before dropping to 50 seconds on the 4th of the six laps. The filthy conditions led to an attritional race, the last of the Eastern Road Race League series this season, with riders regularly dropping off the back especially in the more exposed sections.

Brown clung on in the penultimate lap of the of the 59-mile race to win the final prime by a few seconds before being absorbed into the dwindling pack.  Once back in the peloton, Brown was superbly looked after by his team mates, managed to recovery and then was still able to launch another attack in the final few miles.

He held off the rest of the peloton, down to just 16 riders, soloing to a much-deserved victory a few seconds ahead of the pack. Timothy Torrie (Vitus Pro Cycling) won the sprint for 2nd ahead of Jordan Calcutt (Islington CC).
