Q & A: Nathan Smith (Cycling Sheffield)
2019 – a success or could do better?
Nathan: 2019 was a good year for me, my second proper season racing and a lot of good experiences.
What was the highlight of the 2019 season for you?
Nathan: Finally winning a race in my final race of the season (Lancaster University Cycling Club Autumn Series 1)
What was the most fun/enjoyable race in 2019?
Nathan: Yorkshire regional champs, hilly and hard, but that’s why I liked it…
What was the toughest race in 2019 and why?
Nathan: Ryedale GP, it was very windy and was my first experience of a Nat A race.
What’s the hardest thing about British racing?
Nathan: A combination of grippy roads and full gas racing.
Do you think next year the racing will be more open with less UCI teams?
Nathan: Yes I think so.
Are you missing the racing yet?
Nathan: Yes partly, but it’s nice to have a break.
Most annoying things you see riders do in the peloton?
Nathan: Riders chasing you down, then sitting on and not pulling a turn.

Nathan: Depends on the session. If I can, I’ll go out.
When did the serious training begin this winter?
Nathan: November.
Is your winter training structured?
Nathan: Usually fairly structured.
Do you train alone or is there a chain gang in your area?
Nathan: There are a few guys I go out with from the Leeds area quite a lot over winter. Then the chain gang starts in April.
Finally, what races in 2020 are ones you really want to work towards being part of.
Nathan: I’d like to go well at Ryedale GP, the course suits me quite well, plus the start is 2km up the road from the family home.
