Double Olympic champion on the track, Laura Trott, misses break in the Energiewacht Tour but remains in white jersey contention after a strong team chase

Team Press Release
A strong team performance from the riders of Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling has kept double Olympic champion Laura Trott in contention for the best young rider jersey in the Energiewacht Tour at the end of the windy second stage. Despite a tough day in the saddle, the 20-year-old ended the day just 42 seconds behind Jolanda Neff (Rabobank-Liv/Giant) in the classification, after the Swiss rider managed to get into the stage-winning move of 13-riders.
“The girls rode well,†said team directeur sportif Simon Cope. “They rode really well. “The race split into a million groups, and the groups were coming back together, and then that 13-rider group went,†he continued. “But straight away they went to the front and started riding, and the maturity of the riders – with the oldest at 23 – taking the decision that they’d got to ride was amazing.”
“They rode on the front, swapping turns, for the best part of 60 or 70 kilometres,†Cope added. “They kept the gap at between two minutes and a minute and a half, and I think that’s pretty impressive for a group of young riders.
“It shows maturity, and also shows how strong the team spirit must be,†he concluded. “They want to ride for each other, and you don’t see many teams doing that really.â€
Kirsten Wild (Argos-Shimano) took her second straight stage – with time bonuses extending her overall lead – ahead of Chloe Hosking (Hitec Products) and Adrie Visser (Boels-Dolmans). Thanks to hard work from the Wiggle Honda team, the gap was just 1’43†as the first half of the peloton arrived at the finish, where – despite having put a lot of effort into the chase – Olympic champion Dani King managed to sprint into 18th place.
The third day will feature two split stages, beginning with a 21km time trial, where Trott will have every chance of taking her white jersey back. “Laura’s lost the jersey by 42 seconds,†Cope confirmed, “so we’ll hit the time trial hard, and see how it goes from there.â€
Unfortunately, the team will be reduced to five riders for day three, as Ana-Bianca Schnitzmeier was brought down in a crash. The tough German was not seriously injured, but took a heavy blow to the hip that she had crashed on the previous day and was unable to finish.
In other news, Olympic Silver medallist on the road, Lizzie Armitstead, did make the break, finishing 11th on the stage and now sits highest placed of the Brits in 9th overall.
