Stocksbridge CC Road Race (thanks to Ian Hirst)
A field of 46 riders took to the start line for the 2nd annual Stocksbridge CC Road Race on the challenging Upper Denby course headquartered at Penistone School.
With overcast skies threatening to spoil the fun at any time and a moderate cross-wind the race left Well House Lane for the neutralised start up to the left turn at Renald Lane and the race start proper.
On the first descent everyone stayed together for the plunge down to Cawthorne, with speeds touching 45mph in places on this fastest section of the course.
Having safely negotiated the descent and the junction onto the main A635, with the peloton passing the South/West Yorkshire boundary the first victims of the terrain started to drop off the back, the first to succumb at 3.2miles and 6 mins of racing completed. By the first crossing of the finish line at 5.7miles the peloton were reduced by 6.
On lap 2 at 19 miles into the race the winning break of 5 riders had formed and gained 22sec, by 21 miles their advantage increased to 48sec and the riders were now confirmed as Andrew Nichols (Neon-Velo.com), Matthew Robinson (All Terrain Cycles), James Baillie (Langsett Cycles RT), Nick Spencer (Gosforth RC) and William Corden (Lyme RC).
That group stayed together for the whole of the race and only split on the final lap and the run into the finish. At the start of lap 3 at 23 miles, a chasing group of 3 had formed and the break’s advantage reduced to 23 secs with the peloton at 28sec, however the chase didn’t last long and the 3 were back in the peloton by the left turn at Renald Lane and the gap was now 35 sec.
Various solo riders attempted to bridge across, but never got close and, though the peloton were active, their deficit grew slowly but steadily, with riders dropping off the back as the miles, the wind and the gradient all took their toll. With 2 laps to go the break had 46 sec advantage at the left turn after the finish line, which grew to 55 secs on the bell lap and 1:20 as they passed the county boundary sign for the last time with 45 miles and 2 hours of racing completed.
Coming into the finish the break of 5 split with Robinson and Baillie taking the first 2 places, followed by Corden, Nichols and Spencer. 48 miles of racing covered in 2:08 gives some idea of how challenging this course was!
