Report from Julie Rodman (thanks!)
A windy open exposed airfield in North Yorkshire was the setting for Ilkley CC’s first attempt at organising five races in a day. Set in the shadows of the White Horse at Kilburn it was a lovely setting. They certainly did the sport proud, great atmosphere, great racing and good banter with primes of coffee and a bacon butty……what more could you ask for?
The first race up was for 3/4th cats.
This field was a mixture of novices and experienced riders and quick to make the pace were the riders from ‘We love Mountains’, Team Swift and Albarosa CC. This started the race for prizes with Graham Morgan (We love mountains) taking the first prime and Simon Beldon Team Swift taking the second.
The riders wouldn’t let anyone get away and it was down to a bunch gallop with experienced rider Daniel Webb Team (cystic Fibrosis) taking the win from Richard Cross BBM Revolution and Joe Wilkinson (Albarosa CC) and John Hopper (Cottingham Coureurs).

4th Cat race
Fifty nine riders took to the circuit for the fourth cat race which goes to show just how popular road racing has become over the past year since the legacy of the Olympics.
Again, two primes were on offer food or cash, both always work wonders to motivate the riders to sprint, none more than Mark Tobin (Albarosa CC) who won both primes. The wind took its toll on the riders however a sprint for the line was again in order with Alistair Wareham showing his speed and strength to take the win from in form Mark Tobin (Albarosa CC) and Tom Unwin in third place.

Women’s E1/2/3/4
It was encouraging to see 25 riders taking to the start line at Dishforth today. The ladies worked well together and it wasn’t long before Ruth Taylor jumped away for a prime win. She was one of seven Manchester Wheelers taking part. The second prime was won by Sarah Murray of Leeds University CC. The two strongest riders broke away slightly into the home straight with Iona Sewell (GB Cycles) taking the win from Seonaid Thompson (Albarosa CC) with Ruth Taylor taking the third.

Mens Elite 1/2/3 race
This had a field of thirty seven riders with some who had raced in the earlier event. The quality was certainly in force. A break on the first lap saw two riders break clear, Tim Lawson (Wheelbase CC) and local rider Matt Bulmer (Dirtwheels RT). They worked well together over the eight laps and stayed clear to take the primes, Matt Bulmer taking the first one and Tim Lawson taking the second.
They were then joined by Ben Kellett (Hope factory racing). As they approached the bell, these riders were joined by Alistair Hepworth (Clay Cross RT), the speed increased and with the hard head wind back straight it sorted the men out from the boys to have a great finish. Tim Allen (private member) took the well deserved win from Alistair Hepworth with Ben Kellett third and Matt Bulmer holding on for a well deserved 4th place.

Mixed Cats
The last event was a mixed affair with every category taking to the circuit with a bit of advantage going to the ladies then the fourth cats. The two ladies who broke away were Iona Sewell and Becky Rimmington who held the lead for the first lap until they were joined by Neil Harris (University of York).
These were to work well until they were finally caught by the scratch group. Leaving the best move until last and doing his club proud, it was down to a sprint between Ged Millward (Ilkley CC) and previous inform rider Matt Bulmer (Dirtwheels) with Ged using his experience to take the win, with Matt second and Shaun Nicholson taking the third sport for Balck Hawk bikes.

It’s certainly was a great day of racing and what it like in sunshine it certainly didn’t lack in competitive spirit. Great job by Neil Rollins on his first attempt of organising. Looking forward to more events next year.
