Despite appalling conditions Bottrill, Breaks another course record!Â
Sunday morning in the small town of Harby, in Lincolnshire, Round 7 of the RTTC time trial series took part. The series consists of 8 races over the year with this season seeing the best four races to qualify for the overall title.
Today’s event was over a distance of 24.5 miles with a course record of 51:37 set by Jeff Jones www.drag2zero.com in last seasons event. The course was technical, undulating, and open, with high winds torrential rain and very cold conditions, it was going to be a really testing event!
The race got underway and the first rider to set the standard was Dean Robson, Somerset Rc 56:36 which was then beaten by Scott Walker, Mg Decor Team Carbon Bikes 55:53, and then Jack Green, Velo Club St Raphael 55:48.
With just two riders left to start Brett Harwood, Terry Wright Cycles Rc, coming into some good form, was soon flying and setting the fastest pace around the course. With the wind picking up and the rain beginning to pour, it was now the turn of inform Matthew Bottrill (www.Drag2zero.com) to take the start! Stamping down on the pedals from the starting area, he was soon into his aero tuck and hitting speeds of 30mph!
The first undulations appeared in the village of Newton, a series of small ascents with little rest bite in between, with the wind picking up, Bottrill got his first glimpse of his 2 minute man Harwood, at 10 miles, who in turn had already caught his 2 minute man, Steven Guymer, Clay Cross Rt. With all three on the fastest section of the course, it was a long drawn out catch for Bottrill, who eventually caught the pairing at 14 miles.
With Just over 10 miles to go, Bottrill pushed hard producing his highest number of watts, but knowing the course record was just in sight. It was a painful finish and on the line he stopped the clock in 51:22, for a new course record! Harwood also finished strong in a time of 54:32 for 2nd place.
Asked about his winning ride Bottrill, replied “That was savage out there today. The rain made each section of the course quite slippery, so I just played it safe around the corners, then applied the power on the flat sections of road. I’m pleased with today’s ride. I’ve been finding it quite hard to motivate myself this week, but ended up producing a very satisfactory ride”
