This year’s Lyme Racing Club Hillclimb on the ‘Killer Mile’ at Mow Cop saw an event record 69 riders on the startsheet, including 13 under-18s. Last year’s winner Matt Clinton (Mike Vaughan Cycles) and runner-up Lee Baldwin (Buxton CC) returned to the event, whilst Tejvan Pettinger (SRI Chimnoy Cycling Team) was expected to give 2012’s top two strong competition for the win. Unfortunately we were not blessed with the fine weather from 2012, with light rain throughout the event leading to some riders reporting some wheelspin on the steep 25% section just before the finish.

Early starters included Joe Swinnerton (Lyme Racing Club) who claimed the fastest juvenile prize with an impressive 5:31.2, which saw him take 12th overall. Swinnerton’s teammates Dan Minor and James Brayford took 2nd and 3rd juvenile prizes.
Helen Eborall (Born to Bike – Bridgtown Cycles) was the fastest of the four ladies entrants in a time of 6:11.4, ahead of Jayne Dickens (Stone Wheelers) and Claire Green (Lyme Racing Club). The fastest junior prize went to Jack O’Neill (Mike Vaughan Cycles) who also took 6th overall with a fine ride of 5:02.6. Lyme Racing Club’s Alex Copp and Joe Pattinson took 2nd and 3rd junior respectively.
Nick Decker (Congleton CC) led the event for over an hour and eventually claimed 5th overall with 4:54.5 – Nick had requested an early start so he could dash off to ride the Rake HC at Ramsbottom where he took 14th place. Nick’s time was finally beaten by Chris Baines (Buxton CC) who took the lead by just 0.1s, good enough for a final 4th place and a place in the winning team. Lee Baldwin (Buxton CC) improved upon his time from 2012 with 4:35.9, following victory at the Rutland CC promotion at Mam Nick the previous day.

Tejvan Pettinger is a man in serious form though as he added another win and course record to his impressive results this Autumn, which must make him a serious contender for the National Championships in two weeks time. Tejvan’s time of 4:22.9 took 1.9s off Matt Clinton’s CR from 2012, with Clinton doing 4:30.6 today to pip Baldwin into 3rd. Baldwin was backed up by Chris Baines and Bhima Bowden (8th place) to help Buxton CC claim the team prize.
I would like to extend my thanks to all helpers, marshals and officials who helped to make the event a success. Many thanks to all riders for supporting the event and I hope to see you all back at the 2014 edition. Lastly I’d like to wish the very best of luck to those competing in the National Hillclimb Championships in two weeks time.
Lee Baldwin
