The Southern BC board have agreed that all novice women racers taking part in the coaching sessions at Odd Down throughout December will have their day licence fees paid for their first race.

So says an email from Darren and Jenny. It goes on to say “basically there’s no good reason not to race. Hope to see as many of you as possible on the 8th. Tell your friends”.
What they mean is that there is going to be a series of races at Odd Down (Bath) through the winter, starting on the 8th of December and continuing through to the end of February, each hosted by one of the local clubs.
Alongside the usual men’s races, there will be some Women’s only events and following discussion with a focus group representing the regions clubs, it has become apparent that there is a core of local ladies keen to give racing a go but unsure of where to start. As well as that, there are also some more experienced ladies with nowhere local to race.
The format going forward will be this say Darren & Jenny; there will be some women only races to start the day. Throughout December, to meet the demand of those looking to get started, these will be Regional C events meaning that there’s no points available and there will be coaching sessions beforehand with female coaches in order to learn the skills required to ride and race competently.
The aim of all this being to get the female riders started who need some help in the right direction. The races will be easy going, possibly with the help in the bunch from some of the more experienced ladies and then come January, we’ll re-assess the need for coaching and beginners session or whether to upgrade these races to point scoring categories.
Additionally, there will be an entry fee which throughout December will a reduced rate of £6 for pre-entries and £10 for entry on the day, increasing in January to £12 and £15 respectively as the level of racing increases. This is for the hire of the venue, paramedic cover and other associated costs.
Our aim in all of this is, to provide an introduction and some assistance in getting racing in the safe environment of the excellent closed circuit facility that we have nearby, and to show we’ve listened to what’s been said to us by the ladies of the region. If we’ve got anything wrong, or haven’t covered anything then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
So in brief – December 8th, Women’s only “introductory” race at 10am at Odd Down with a coaching session immediately before, time TBC. Hope to see you there and please, share this with your friends.
