Talking to Rob Partridge (Velosure-Giordana) after he’d won the Jock Wadley Memorial Road Race in Essex on Sunday

Rob Partridge (Velosure/Giordana- 1st): The winner of the race, third at Eddie Soens the week before, was a surprise winner. “I was suffering all day really. I was thinking ‘oh my god, I don’t know what I am going to have at the finish’.â€
“I got dropped in the tailwind section when I got caught out and a gap opened up and I was time trialling a bit with 3k to go and I thought ‘I’ll keep going’ as they were all looking at each other. Yanto didn’t want to take those two away and I caught them and they were chopping across the road and I just thought ‘right, I have nothing to lose hereâ€.
“It was their race to lose as they are the sprinters, and I made a bit of a dummy attack down on the right hand side, a bit of a slow motion attack and looking at them while I was doing it. It was an obvious attack and as soon as I had a gap, I found something extra in the legs and opened up the after burners a little bit.â€
“I had been cramping the last lap but didn’t cramp at all when I attacked. I did leave a little in reserve until I’d got over the rise (that was the hill near the finish) and then kicked again and am pretty happy with that winâ€.
“Everywhere was tough today, even the tailwind section because we were tramming it all day. It was a quality group really and those boys were canning it. I never missed a turn really but did what I could to try and not give the impression I was suffering as much as I was.â€
“I am going well but I have not yet been going full gas in my training. Everything is quality that I am doing and it’s paying off and relieved to get this win.â€
“It goes to show that the boys in this team have ambition. We’re not afraid to race and we saw that from the first two races, Clayton Velo and Soens. I think we’ll move forward now and continue to be an aggressive team. We all know how to race here. It’s British racing, you have to be out the front and can’t be afraid of making an effort.â€
Last year I had a good year but wasn’t majorly happy with it because I missed the big win. I feel invigorated coming here. It’s nice and relaxed. Bill (Nickson) is there and do what you want to do. Yesterday (Roy Thame) I had this race in mind as it’s a bit more suited to me.â€
“As soon as I missed the front group at Roy Thame and nothing became of the chasing group, I thought, right, trust myself to get the ks in, not over do it and finish it fresh. I said to them last night I had an easy day and said to Bill this morning, this is the day and I’m glad I pulled it offâ€.
