Proving strongest on the final climb of East Creech Hill, James Horton (Cannondale) pulled away to win the Primera Purbeck Road Race in Dorset. The 43 mile 3rd/4th cat race was an absorbing affair on the popular 5 mile Furzebrook circuit with constant attacks keeping the pace high.
Paddy Dunn (CC Weymouth) was the first to go but no one was following his wheel and Dunn was soon back in the bunch. Matt Dunsbier (Veloton Team) was happy to ride shotgun for most of the race, third last week on the flat at Cricklade, Dunsbier is not a climber and position was important.
Seventeen year old George Smith (Gillingham & Dist Wh),Mountain biker, Kim Little (Merida), Ryan Weston (Poole Wheelers), Roland Tilley (Ridebike.co.uk), Chris Noble (Westbury Wheelers) & Horton all tried to escape the peloton but with primes on offer each time across the line, it was proving difficult to get away. East Creech hill establishes an order but the fast descent to the duck pond allows the stragglers to regain contact and the speed is always kept high back passed the HQ.
Paul Double (VC Venta) attacked on the 4th of 8 laps, the 18 year old pulling out a slender lead of 7 seconds, Double had made the race winning move on the same course in July but had run out of legs, this time he looked stronger but needed company. He was still out front with 2 to go but was never out of sight of the pack, a bidon and some sage advice from father Len saw him sit up and they were all together at the bell.
Once more Paddy Dunn tried but just like on the first lap, he was going nowhere. Double had another go and led again as the race reached the hill; an older, wiser head might have waited a little longer, it was too early, he knows that now , at least the combativity award was his. Little took over at the front but Horton was waiting to pounce and as the climb swung left to the finish he had too much power for the off-roader, as did Chris Tomsett (Southampton Uni CC) and Weston who both came round the fading Little.
Post-race, Organiser Steve Dring was busy fielding compliments from satisfied customers on an excellent promotion. The Primera-UK Biking team offer a packed lunch & a crisp tenner to all their Marshalls & race officials ensuring a smooth, trouble -free afternoon on the Isle of Purbeck.
