News: Weekly Racing in LancsÂ
The Steven Burke closed road circuit in Pendle will host Thursday night racing from April 16th and will run for an initial 13 weeks. The 1.1km flood lit facility was completed in July last year and recently handed over to the Cycling Development Pendle Partnership (CDPP) user group, an umbrella organisation made up of local clubs.
Cycle Sport Pendle who have over 200 young members run coached sessions every Saturday and the circuit is well used mid week with flood lit training and chain gang sessions. CDPP spokesman Peter Boast said “We are confident the organisation will grow and develop over the coming months and years and the Thursday night criterium series will bring all our clubs together in terms of marshalling, commisaires and so on. CSP ran a test event late season last year and the circuit was rated very highly by the riders, technical enough to create good racing with two long straights, there are no hiding placesâ€.
The circuit also encapsulates an exact footprint of a 250 meter ‘flat’ velodrome which is used to coach the area’s budding track riders. “it’s ideal for the kids and from a coaching perspective gives us so many options for interesting sessions the young riders can relate to, Burkey’s discipline in team pursuit the obvious oneâ€
Steven Burke is Pendle’s golden boy and the Olympic champion was a major factor in the push to get a lasting London legacy in this part of East Lancashire. Funding from Pendle Borough council, Sport England, British Cycling and the Lancashire Environmental fund ensured the success of the project. Peter added “ Geographically we are just over the border from many neighbouring Yorkshire clubs and teams and we are sure the Thursday criterium series will be very popular with riders from both the NW and Yorkshire regions and is off junction 13 of the M65.
Details of the racing will appear on the BC website soon and will be ‘on the line’ entry only. For more information about the Steven Burke Hub visit www.cdpp.org.uk
