The 11th UCI 1.2, Rutland – Melton International CiCLE Classic takes place on Sunday with almost 200 riders and the oldest one day UCI race in Britain is set to be another corker of a race. So many strong teams but only one winner means the race will be a really exciting one. One of the teams to watch, not least because of their ethos of racing agressively, will be NFTO who go into the race with six riders; Dale Appleby, Tom Barras, Ian Bibby, Sam Harrison, Jonny McEvoy and Steele von Hoff.
“We’re sending a team where we have multiple cards to play, as CiCLE Classic is hard control due to the nature of the race and can be unpredictable, says the team’s DS, Dave Povall.”Ian Bibby will go into the race as our team leader for the weekend based on his previous form and relationship with the race (finishing 2nd in 2013) and we’ll be hoping to get him a step higher on the podium”.
“Due to his mountain bike background the race suits him and he always features well. That said we have some solid options within the team. Johnny McEvoy is a hard man and rode Roubaix last year, so he will be unfazed by the terrain, so he could be a great option for us if things don’t go to plan for Bibby.”
“Similarly Tom Barras is another tough cookie and when the weather isn’t fantastic, he’s in his element. Steele von Hoff is another one in the squad that under the right conditions it could be his day”.
“It’s too easy to classify him as a just a sprinter, the parcour suits a crit type rider, with lots of accelerations out of corners. He also has a mountain bike background and if it comes down to a small selection sprint down the main street in Melton Mowbray, we’re willing to bet he’ll be right up there”.
Sam Harrison is also at home says the team on the rough roads, citing his most agressive prize in the junior Paris-Roubaix as proof he’ll one to watch and finally, Dale Appleby is one of the more experienced domestic guys and he has raced this race a few times so he will be crucial in supporting the team on the day.â€
