GB News – Gold for Joey Walker in Athens
From a family of winners through the decades, Joey Walker struck gold for Great Britain on day three of the UEC Under 23 and Junior European Track Championships in Athens on Thursday. Joey won one of the hardest races, the Points for Junior men.
Joey (above) is the son of Chris and Lynne Walker and sister of Jessie Walker who is a professional racing in Italy. Chris Walker won the Milk Race (the stage race) and many British titles whilst Joey’s mum Lynne was racing for GB as a junior as well going on to do that in her senior years.
Joey, racing for a development team called RST Racing (sponsored by Cycle Division) Â has year by year continued to improve, going from the Manchester Friday Track League to the Tuesday one at Manchester where the GB Academy race and then onto the Olympic Development Programme for Juniors.
In Athens which has hosted the Olympics and the Euros in the past, 17-year old Walker stole the limelight, winning a thrilling junior men’s Points race, in a contest that went down to the final sprint. After amassing 14 points prior to the crucial final dash to the line, second place at the gun gave Sheffield’s Walker three more points, enough for gold ahead of race-long rival Szymon Krawczyk of Poland and Denis Nekrasov of Russia. Teammate Ethan Hayter was eighth on six points.
Joey said today “I’m over the moon to have won yesterday, now on to some more racing with Scratch race today”.
