News – Armistead wins World Cup
Lizzie Armitstead (Boels-Dolmans) secured the overall victory of the Women’s World Cup on the road today by winning the GP Plouay. As a result of that win she reclaimed the leaders jersey of the World Cup, she lost because of some bad luck in Vargarda.
There was a long wait in the race before a serious breakaway formed with eight riders but the gap was small and soon, World Champion Pauline Ferrand Prevot attacked and bridged to the move. That was the signal for the peloton to explode and a group of 17 formed at the front including Ferrand Prevot, Van Der Breggen, Garnier, Armitstead, Johansson, Rivat, Longo Borghini and the Brazilian Flavia Olivera.
Three riders, Stevens, the champion of Italy Chiccini and Lichtenberg then get a gap and again, it is still Ferrand Prevot who does most of the work to bring them back 10km from the finish.
The British champion then attacked in the final kilometres of the race, but her competitors came back onto her wheel. In the sprint however, she showed she was the fastest of the front group including the world Champion and got herself and the team a double victory.
Evelyn Stevens received a well deserved Sufferfest Award for most agressive rider. “I am very happy with this result†Lizzie told the press afterwards. “I was always on the front, but I have to thank the team they did a tremendous job.â€
