Team News: Madison Genesis on Tour
Tom Stewart animated the break for Madison Genesis on day one of the 2015 Aviva Tour of Britain, spending over 175-kilometres at the front of the race.
Caught in the final kilometre, Stewart was part of a quartet that escaped at the start of the stage, establishing a maximum lead of nine minutes.
After the stage team manager Roger Hammond reacted to what was a day of delight, balanced by ambition and tinged with disappointment following the withdrawal of Mike Northey. “Mike withdrew through illness mid-way through the stage†Hammond explained.
“He is a cornerstone of the team and to lose a man like that is disappointing all round.†Reviewing the stage Hammond put Stewart’s ride into perspective.
“It was a good ride – Tom put himself in a good place for the jersey, we were there and well represented. “If you asked me this time last year, I would have been over the moon with that result, however today feel differently. The whole team are looking to finish off opportunities and it just shows the state of the team and how we have developed in 12 months.â€
Despite this, Hammond described morale within the team as good, with the ambition of scoring a stage victory still within reach in the remaining seven days of racing. “We’re here to try and win stages and had everyone worked perfectly together in today’s break then it was a possibility. Now we need to keep trying, to be in the break and hopefully in the right combination that means you stay away until the end.â€
How the race unfolded
The break – which included Kristian House, Pete Williams and Conor Dunne – were racing for the honour of wearing the sprint and king of the mountains jerseys.
At the foot of the final classified climb Stewart, Williams and House were equal on points, with the first to the summit receiving the prize.
House made an early move to get clear, ending Tom’s hopes of picking up a jersey on day one, but it took nothing away from his performance on an exceptionally tough day which featured 3000-metres of climbing.
In the sprint to the line Mark McNally remained on the same time as the leaders, with Tom Scully, Tom Stewart, Matt Cronshaw and Matt Holmes eight seconds down, in the first split of the peloton.
