Returning to the fold of Sportgrub Kuota, Zach May takes the VeloUK Question and Answer challenge

Q & A Feature: Zach May
1. With your team all sorted for 2016, what races are you looking forward to most next season?
Zach: Mainly looking forward to doing more road racing than crits next year. With the team having a focus on road racing, it is giving me a great chance to gain more experience and develop my career on the road. The calendar for the team is exciting so there’s a lot to look forward to, but for myself the under 23 national time trial and road race is a big target of mine after not being able to race it this year due to injury.
2. What were your highlights in 2015?
Zach: For me the (Pearl Izumi) Tour Series was the highlight of the season. Six weeks on the road with NFTO was a great experience. We had a great laugh along the way and the racing was hard as it was fun.
3. What race was the most fun in 2015 and why?
Zach: Aberystwyth Tour Series (pictured above) was the most fun for me, starting at the back, it took me 20 minutes to get to the front 10. The moving up through the group, taking corners flat out in the rain (sliding around a few of them) was great fun.
4. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given and who gave it to you?
Zach: Probably came from Luke Rowe back when I was a first year junior just before the Welsh Crit Champs. It went something like don’t show your hand too early, everyone attacks when their fresh so hold back and pick your moment.  Worded a little bit different to that but that’s the interview friendly version! It worked and I won the Junior title and finished 2nd in the senior race to Dale Appleby.
5. Tell us about your winter training bike, what is different about it compared to your race bike?
Zach: My winter bike is a Kuota Kuraro. Supplied by the team, its a great bike for racing and training. The only real difference between that and the race bike is Mavic training wheels, Continental Gatorskins, a frame pump and a saddle bag. Oh, and an ass saver!
6. Finally, how will you spend December on the bike?
Zach:Â I will mainly be spending it at home but planning a 10 day block out in Spain with a few of the lads from the team mid December. Will mainly be doing miles this winter to prepare for the focus on road racing next year, combined with a track session a week behind the motorbike to keep the leg speed ticking over through the winter months and strength/power training on and off the bike.
