Feature: Gemma Sargent Q & A
1. What was your highlight from 2015 and who are you riding for in 2016?
Gemma: My highlight was racing at the Cheshire Classic & in my first national race coming 23rd. I was massively boxed in on the sprint up the last hill but all a learning curve & tactics for next time. I was also given great opportunities from the racing chance foundation to race at the Milk race & Holme Valley wheelers 2 day stage race. I am excited to be racing for Aprire-hss hire for the 2016 season.
2. When will you start your road season and what will be the first race?
Gemma: I have already started with a few local crits, then March sees the season start properly with some local North West road races.
3. What races will be your targets for 2016 and why?
Gemma: The national road series, as well as some international races & racing in Belgium. I want to get some solid results in the national series & gain experience from racing abroad.
4.How will you spend the time on the bike between now and your first race in training?
Gemma: With the flooding in Cumbria & general bad weather it’s been a lot of turbo, but getting out for the longer rides when the weather is ok. I’m not one for training in driving rain & icy conditions….you will just get ill from it! If it’s just light rain then I will be out & in my waterproof gear. If it’s completely dire then I’m on the turbo!
5. If you could do any race in the world including the best ones in the world etc, what would it be and why?
Gemma: The Women’s Tour of Britain (the Women’s Tour) ….what an amazing race & on home soil!
6. What piece of food can you not do without where ever you are on the road during the season!
Gemma: All of it lol! I have a very high metabolism so need to eat constantly or I lose too much weight. Generally though on longer rides I tend to fuel up with bananas & home made flapjacks.
7. What is your favourite music track when warming up for a race or on the turbo?
Gemma: Any of the Prodigy tracks, gets me focused!
8. Who is the professional in the peloton on the tele who you enjoy watching race most and why?
Gemma: I think Lizzie Armistead is an inspiration & amazing rider.
9. If given the option, would you prefer normal brakes or disc brakes on your road bike?
Gemma: Normal. You don’t need disc brakes for road riding…. even living in Cumbria you don’t need disc brakes! They are too aggressive for the race peloton.
10. What’s the spec of your race bike for 2016 and your favourite bits on it?
Gemma: I will be riding the Aprire Vincenza with 11 speed Ultegra & power cranks. I love all of the bike if I’m honest so can’t choose!
