Report: Women’s Race at the ELV Rumble

Amy Roberts sprints to victory in the Women’s race.

The first race of the senior events was for the men’s 3 and 4th category riders ahead of the first round on the London Women’s League. With 29 ladies on the start line, the biggest representation came from the teams, Look Mum No Hands,  Persons Cycles and Kingston wheelers. The ladies were to start a minute behind the 3rd and 4th cat riders.

Aggressive riding was Emma Grant’s style, and soon she headed a much reduced bunch with Nicola Hamilton and Louise Moriarty contributing to the pace. They continued to attack one another testing each others resolve and as they did,  more riders were slipping off the back. With a lap to go from an hours racing, the bunch was down to eight riders, three of those were from the well represented Look Mum no Hands Team.

It wasn’t going to be team tactics that would contribute to a win as the riders came into view though. Emma was still pushing hard at the front, while Anna and Amy could only follow. It wasn’t going to be the strongest rider who was going to win the day but the rider with the best turn of speed in a sprint.  Young Amy Roberts from Wales was set in the best position on Emma’s wheel and on the last incline towards the finish, Emma opened the sprint before Amy Roberts of the Cardiff Ajax club, dug deep to pass Emma to win the sprint by a bike length with Anna Grundy, Look Mum No Hands for 3rd.
