One of the few Olympic stars at the championships on day 1 was Beijing Bronze medallist Steven Burke who easily won the Men’s Pursuit from Under 23 Sam Harrison with Junior, Jon Dibben one of the surprises of the night with third.

Peter Maxwell of British Cycling writes … World Team Sprint Silver Medallist Jess Varnish posted a lifetime best time of 34.500 to take the 500m TT title on the opening night of the British National Track Championships at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester. Varnish was the penultimate rider to go after World Team Pursuit Champion Laura Trott laid down an impressive early time. Becky James, who was last to ride, failed to depose Varnish from top spot, but did enough to comfortably take silver.

Two Olympic stars of the future, Becky James (Left) and Jess Varnish (centre) grabbed the first two medals in the Women’s 500 metre TT whilst former development GB sprinter, Laura Trott (World Womens Team Pursuit Championhip) was the bronze medallist.

Olympic Bronze Medallist Steven Burke produced a strong performance in the Open Pursuit as he caught GB Team Pursuit teammate Sam Harrison, in an impressive time of 3.59.758 and claim the national champions jersey. Jonathon Dibben, fresh from a strong season on the road beat Doug Dewey for the Bronze medal.

Jon Allen Butterworth set a new World Record of 1.07.459 (for the MC5 category) as he rode superbly in the Para Cycling TT. Meanwhile, the tandem combination of Aileen McGlynn and Helen Scott narrowly missed out on breaking a world record of their own by under half a second, and the tandem pairing of Neil Fachie and Barney Storey comfortably claimed the bronze medal.

The podium for the Paracycling Time Trial – L-R: Aileen McGlynn, Helen Scott, Jon-Allan Butterworth (new world record holder), Barney Storey and Neil Fachie.

It was a rather empty and low key start to the championships with none of the  Olympic Gold medalists  (able bodied)  or major road stars (men) in attendance or much of a crowd. That is expected to change though when the likes of Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton grace the track for their events.

Great result for UK Youth with Olympic Bronze medallist Steven Burke winning the Pursuit.

Straight from the road worlds, Junior Jon Dibben shocked himself by winning the Bronze medal.

Lizzie Armitstead: After a dissapointing finish to the World Road Race Championship (Women) where she was caught up in a crash, British Road Race Champion (Women) started the process of finding her track legs  in the Women’s 500 metre time trial.

After having won the British Under 23 Time Trial title, Doug Dewey proceeded to shock many in the Track world by finishing 4th in the Pursuit, the only non-GB squad rider in the top nine places in qualifying.

2012 hopeful, Jess Varnish, gives the race to the line everything she has and comes up with a Gold medal and Personal Best.

Paracycling World Champion, Jon-Allan Butterworth was a World Record breaker on the night as he won the Paracycling Time Trial British title.
