Report: National Cyclo-Cross Trophy RD 5

Mud and more mud was the order of the day for the fifth round of the National Trophy and in the tough conditions, the results were certainly a change from the previous rounds in most races

Seniors…

Paul Oldham (above) won a titanic battle in Bradford but it wasn’t Jody Crawforth (Hargroves Cycles) who has been his main rival all series, but Nick Craig who provided the challenge.

Nick Craig had the crowd cheering for him as he led a National Trophy for the first time in a while showing he does get better with age!

Endura Racing’s Rob Partridge was sporting a new look as he was cheered on by the likes Ian Wilkinson and Scott Thwaites, teammates in the Scottish team.

The crowd for the Senior race was noticeably bigger …

After ripping his rear mech off, Paul Oldham is passed by his arch rival Jody Crawforth on YouTube descent.

Dave Collins had a good start and is pictured leading teammate Paul Oldham in the early stages of the race.

The seniors get under way …

The Morning Session

Darren Atkins leads Jim Bryan and Noel Clough but it was Bryan who won the race from Clough with Atkins 3rd..

What a difference the mud makes! With heavy rain in the course at Peel Park, the races have seen a different dynamic to them. For example, in the Veterans Over 40, Darren Atkins has been leading the way recently with several solo victories but on the course at Bradford, which was tough as well as slippery, Jim Bryan ran away with the race from Noel Clough and then Atkins.

Meanwhile, in the Over 50’s, Mick Bell started strongly but Steven Davies was resisting all challenges and he to found the course to his liking and Bell, in great form, had no answer to the speed of Davies especially on the running sections.

Mick Bell, series leader in Green, shadows British Champion Steven Davies but the Jewson rider was to fast over the muddy and hilly terrain and won by over a minute.

In the Women’s Annie Last and Louise Robinson were neck and neck all race but in the final sprint for the line, Last was too quick for Robinson who got a hug from her star dad, Brian Robinson (Tour de France staged winner) on the podium. Third was Isla Rowntree.

There was nothing between Louise Robinson (left) and Annie Last until the sprint whenLast, one of the top women in the world in MTB, sprinted clear for the win.

The course was rather slippery, specially YouTube descent as this veteran found when he crashed in a most painful way ….

In the Juniors, it was a runaway win for Joseph Moses on home ground. The inform Hugo Robinson tried his best to challenge Moses but the conditions suited the yellow jerseyed Moses and he made the most of them to win alone.

Overall, during the first part of the programme, it’s been tough for the riders. The course is getting more and more slippery the more rain we get and the descent nicknamed YouTube Descent, has seen its share of fallers. The climb the other way as the steps are not being used, saw the riders struggle for grip to walk, crawl or run up it. No-one is riding it as far as I have seen so far!

Unlike the fast courses so far, this one is seeing a lot more running required and it’s suiting different riders…

Joe Moses wins the Junior race after leading from the start on his home turf

A big field of Youth riders assemble for the start.

Lucy Garner and her RST Clothinig/Trigon bikes teammate Abby-Mae Parkinson had the ‘war mud’ on for the Youth Girls race. Grace said afterwards it was a lot of fun!

With a crowd all ready to cheer a faller, the girls in the Youth race take the YouTube descent well and deny the crowd the pleasure of seeing yet another faller on the slippery slopes.

Another victory for Jack Ravenscroft in the Under 16 Boys

Another victory too for Dan Tulett in the Under 14 Boys.

The course was so muddy, judges had to race after the riders and clear the mud off the numbers so they could be read.
