Larry Hickmott writes… The first round of the 2012 Rudy Project Time Trial Series was held on my old patch in a very picturesque part of country west of Northampton. Villages with cottages fit for a chocolate box abounded and the out and back course was not just a test for the riders but also a lovely way to spend a day for spectators, marshals, time keepers and working photographers (ahem).

Showing that even champions hurt, Matt Bottrill pictured during his winning ride on Sunday in the hurt box. Photo from http://www.kimroy-photography.co.uk/sport.php (Many more on the website)

Matt Bottrill, winning round 1 of the Rudy Project TT Series

The time trial saw a few of the country’s best time trialists like eventual winner Matt Bottrill (Drag2Zero), Hillclimb champion Gunnar Gronland (RST/Trigon) and Jeff Jones (Drag2Zero), the BBAR and 12 hour record holder. But while the quality was there, the number of top riders racing was small and as it was my first Rudy Project race, I can’t say why that would be. I see hard rider events with far bigger fields, I would have thought a race in the middle of the country would have been better supported. Especially a national series but then this is a world I know very little about!

Still, I’ll leave that chestnut to those in the time trial community to discuss and work through. I was impressed that they had the results on the board so quickly (I’m easily pleased!). The CTT certainly know how to get a riders time from the time keepers back to the HQ and onto the results board for everyone to see and discuss. If only results at road races could be that quick!

Sam Harrison, all good after injury took him out of the running for a spot in the GB team at the Track Worlds, came close to winning the time trial which was a test for him as he looks to do the event at the Under 23 Worlds.

The race though. Matt Bottrill won and we’ll have a interview with him and a look at his bike soon on VeloUK. He caught a quality rider in the form of Tejvan Pettinger for two minutes but only just held off a young rider going places, Sam Harrison from Wales. Third was the BBAR Jeff Jones. Other highlights was seeing Julian ‘Rambo’ Ramsbottom finish fastest vet in his first year in the category. His time was sixth fastest on the day overall so a good ride by the former roadie turned time trialist.

Overall, I really enjoyed the day. Had it been raining, that enjoyment may have been dampened somewhat but the cake was excellent, the riders good to talk to and the bikes quite special to look at (nothing like bikep0rn). I’m not sure when I’ll get time to get to another but I do hope the CTT can get some more support for them… maybe it should be called the Hard Rider’s series as those events seem to do alright!

2011 BBAR, Jeff Jones, was third.

Stunning area to visit even through the riders in the race probably never had any time to take a look.
