News – First Season win for Graham South
Graham South, 40, from Leegomery in Telford, was riding for the Paramount Performance Cycling Racing Team in the Spring Critirium closed circuit race held at Shrewsbury Sports Village in Shrewsbury at the weekend.
South scooped 10 BC ranking points by taking first place in the 3rd cat after winning a four man break before using his strength to drive the group, before lapping the riders to cross the finish line with a sprint.
South was selected for the Paramount Performance Cycling Racing Team after racing for the Shrewsbury based Paramount CRT club. The dedicated cyclist, who is planning on taking part in the Shrewsbury Grand Prix in May, said: “I have trained extremely hard in the run up to the first race of the season so to take first place was amazing”.
“To be selected for the team was such a privilege so I am pleased I have been able to show everyone what I am capable of. The standard of riders is extremely high at this level so the season will be tough but I am determined to carry on with the same strength as I have started.”
The team includes Victoria Grimmer, Tomos Owens, Chris Wilkinson and Dave Griffiths.
Ben Lawrence, managing director of insurance broker Beaumont Lawrence, which sponsors the team with Stan’s Cycles, said: “Graham’s victory at the weekend demonstrates what sheer determination can achieve – he raced magnificently.
“Considering Graham only joined Paramount in 2012 and enjoyed his first racing season just last year, he is determined to take the first place – winning is certainly in Graham’s formula.
“He is an inspiration to other members of the team and also to other cycling fans who may be considering joining our club.
“We hope this is the start of things to come for both Graham and the rest of the team for the season ahead.” Fellow team member David Griffiths took third place in the 2nd cat race after leading for the first half of the race. The second half saw his competitors join him before two riders, Richard Bussell from Beacon Roads Cycling Club, and George Evans from Mid Shropshire Wheelers, broke away.
Dave tried valiantly to bridge the gap on his own and got within 100 meters by the end of the race but it was too much for one rider to do so the leaders took the top two positions.
Meanwhile Dave Vasey and Tony Clarkson, also members of Paramount Cycling Racing Team, took part in their first ever race at the sports village. Members of the racing team are currently training in Majorca In preparation for the rest of the season. For more information about the Paramount Cycling Racing Team visit www.paramountcrt.org
