October 4-11, 2014 | 430 riders from 33 countries
An example of how internation the podiums are, this is Gary Mandy from Wollongong in Australia who set a new World Best of 34.335 in the Men’s 55 to 59 time trial. Carlos Zicavo of Argentina (left) was second and Richard Voss (right) added another medal to the collection for the USA.
Racing in the eight day UCI World Masters Track Cycling Championships began on Saturday with the USA dominating proceedings with three of the five gold medals on offer. Italy and Latvia were the other winners whilst the home nation, Britain, rode away empty handed.
The Championships are an opportunity for club cyclists from the ages of 30 to 75 and over (in five year age bands) to add a rainbow jersey to their trophy cabinet and attempting to do so are 430 riders from 33 nations who have converged on Manchester Velodrome.
The second day of the championships saw twelve world titles decided with a very international array of riders on the top step of the podium. Top nation on day two turned out to be the Brits bouncing back with three of the twelve championships whilst the rest of the rainbow jerseys went to the USA, Australia, Ireland, Denmark, New Zealand, and Finland.
SATURDAY
Five World Championship jerseys were awarded to riders on day 1 of the championships at the Manchester Velodrome. Most of the racing were events against the watch but there were two bunch races.
In the Men’s 55 to 59 Scratch race over 30 laps of the track, Larry Nolan of USA won from Stephane Le Beau of Canada and Vladimir Zyryanov of Russia. In the Men’s 60 to 64 Scratch race over five kilometres or 20 laps of the track, the winner was Michael Birditt of the USA with Britain’s Ian Humphreys having to settle for Silver whilst the Bronze went to a Frenchman, Jean Louis Duble.
In the Men’s 45/54 Team Pursuit where teams of four race against the watch to make the finals and in there, race against the other three fastest teams for the three medals on offer, the winners were the USA.
The team, called Project 320, were represented by James Tainter, Daniel Casper, Timothy Mulrooney and David Brinton and they beat the British quartet called secrettraining.cc which comprised Ian Whittell, Timothy Lawson, Stephen Clayton, Jerry Cross). The bronze was won by Wales with Courtney Rowe, Peter Ettles, Alun Owen and Ian Greenstreet.
There was an Italian winner in the Men’s 35 to 39 Time Trial over four laps of the track where Dario Zampieri was fastest by a mere thousands of a second ahead of Brasil’s Estevam Ciampone Mancini. Ben Elliott of Great Britain finished third. The Men’s 40 to 44 Time Trial was won by Ainars Kiksis of Latvia with Norway’s Joseph Santaniello second and Daniel Rickard (Australia) third.
The other racing of the day saw the men’s 50 to 54 sprint take place all the way to the semi final stage with Geoff Stoker (Australia), Wil Zegers (USA), Ferruccio Veschetti (Italy) and Matthew Diefenbach (USA) going through to the semi finals after a big day of racing in that event.
Sunday – Day 2
The racing got a whole lot busier on Sunday with no less than twelve blue jerseys with rainbow bands on offer. The Men’s 50 to 54 Sprint was concluded after it began on the Saturday with the rounds up to the semi finals. That left two events for the Sunday after the line-up for the two finals was decided in the semi finals.
The good run for the USA continued with Gold going to Matthew Diefenbach who defeated Italian Ferruccio Veschetti whilst a prolific winner last year, Geoff Stoker of Australia was third.
The rest of the racing were time trials against the watch and in the Men’s 55 to 59 time trial over two laps of the track (500 metres), Gary Mandy from Wollongong in Australia set a new World Best of 34.335. Carlos Zicavo of Argentina was second and Richard Voss added another medal to the collection for the USA. There was more good news for the Australians in the Men’s 60 to 64 time trial where David Willmott won the Gold from Marc Dangleterre and Jean Louis, both from France.
The Brits got on the score sheet as well on day two with Elliot Davis winning the 3,000 metre (12 laps) pursuit for riders aged 45 to 49. He beat Daniel Casper of the USA in the final ride off for Gold. In the other final, for the bronze, Aussie Andrew Patten beat Alun Owen of Wales.
There was more Gold for the Brits in the Men’s 40 – 44 Pursuit where Lee Suthard defeated Lars Nybo Nielsen of Denmark. Bruno Redondo of France beat Martin Ruepp of Switzerland in a very international bronze medal final.
The Gold rush for the Brits was halted in the Men’s 35 to 39 Pursuit where Henrik Scharling of Denmark got the better of VC St Raphael rider Andy Stuart in the final for Gold. Third was Axel Boland of the Netherlands. Finland got into the Gold medal race as well with Arja Scarsbrook getting the better of Jenni Nicholson in the Women’s Pursuit for those aged 60 and over. Gwynneth Rixon of Britain was third.
Biggest smile of the Worlds so far, goes to Madeline Moore, winner of the 35-39 Pursuit from fellow Brit Niki Kovacs with Susie Mitchell of Ireland in third.
More Gold came the USA’s way in the Women’s 55 to 59 Pursuit where Elizabeth Heller beat Germany’s Petra Kluender with the ever popular Christine Higgs in third. In the Women’s Pursuit for women aged 50 to 54, Gold went to Ireland as Orla Hendron proved too strong for the Aussie Deborah Coulls whilst Alejandra Roca Satorres of Spain won the Bronze against Japanese rider Emi Wachi.
The international flavour to the Masters event got ever stronger with a New Zealand winner in the Women’s 40 to 49 Pursuit. Erin Criglington won the 40-44 Gold medal whilst Janet Birkmyre won the Gold for the 45-49. The two raced each other in the final in a combined event for the categories with the Kiwi just coming out on top by three tenths of a second.
The final event of the night was a new one for the World Masters, an over 65 men’s Team Pursuit. Three teams entered and fastest and World Champions were the Danish Masters from Denmark who set a new World best benchmark of 3.52.305. The USA were second and the GB team third.
Racing resumes on Monday morning at the Manchester Velodrome.
Riders from all over the World have converged on Manchester including South Africa.
